Zaměřuje se na různé formy mateřskosti jako způsobu, který dovede hlavní ženskou postavu románu, Ednu Pontellier, k nejvyššímu překročení její společensky předepsané genderové role. The thesis deals with Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening. It focuses on forms of mothering as a means to the ultimate exceeding of the socially prescribed gender role of its main female character Edna Pontellier. The analysis begins with Edna's learning to swim, and considers it a key event that awoke in Edna the desire and strength to start her search for an independent and autonomous self.
