Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá románem od Kate Chopin: Probuzení. Zaměřuje se na různé formy mateřskosti jako způsobu, který dovede hlavní ženskou postavu románu, Ednu Pontellier, k nejvyššímu překročení její společensky předepsané genderové role. Analýza začíná událostí, kdy se Edna naučí plavat. V této práci se tato událost považuje za klíčovou, protože v Edně probudí touhu a sílu začít usilovat o nalezení sebe sama a vlastní nezávislosti. Následující části práce popisují Ednin postupný vývoj ve schopnosti sebeurčení, kdy opouští domácnost a s ní roli manželky, hospodyně a matky, zatímco se učí vyjadřovat svou sexualitu a pokouší se o finanční a duchovní nezávislost. Její pokusy jsou porovnávány s ideálem ženskosti devatenáctého století. Práce dále představuje další dvě ženské postavy, Adéle Ratignolle a slečnu Reisz, a s nimi jejich způsoby v překračování genderové role. Práce poukazuje na význam těchto žen jako Edniny podpory. Práce také demonstruje důležitost autorčina mateřského vypravěčství, čímž umožňuje Edně vyjadřovat svůj vnitřní svět. Tato práce si klade za cíl prezentovat různé způsoby překračování ženské genderové role u Edny, Adéle, a slečny Reisz. Zdůrazňuje také pojmy mateřství a mateřskosti, které považuje za hybnou sílu románu, protože ty vrcholí Edniným nejzazším překročením genderové role spácháním sebevraždy, kdy se Edna pomyslně stane svou vlastní matkou tím, že prožije duchovní přerod, a tedy i jakési znovuzrození. Ednina sebevražda zároveň považována za autorčin způsob vyjádření názoru o naléhavosti reformace společenských konvencí.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening. It focuses on forms of mothering as a means to the ultimate exceeding of the socially prescribed gender role of its main female character Edna Pontellier. The analysis begins with Edna's learning to swim, and considers it a key event that awoke in Edna the desire and strength to start her search for an independent and autonomous self. The following sections of the thesis describe Edna's continual progress in self-determination, when she dismisses her household and her role as a wife, housekeeper and mother, and affords herself to express her sexuality and experience material and mental independence instead. Her attempts are compared to the nineteenth-century middle-class feminine ideal. Further, the thesis introduces the other two main female characters, Adéle Ratignolle and Mademoiselle Reisz, their own ways of exceeding their prescribed gender roles, and their task to help Edna and support her. The thesis also demonstrates the importance of Kate Chopin's maternal narrative voice that enabled Edna to express her inner world. The thesis aims to present the various ways in which Edna Pontellier, Adéle Ratignolle, and Mademoiselle Reisz exceed their gender roles, and to emphasize the concept of mothering and maternity, which is the driving force of the whole novel, and culminates in Edna's ultimate exceeding of her gender role, when she metaphorically became her own mother by comitting suicide, experiencing a spiritual rebirth. The thesis argues that Edna's suicide was Kate Chopin's way to urge social change.
