Translator’s Style in the English Translations of the Novels Saturnin and Myši Natálie Mooshabrové

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá, jak překladatel literárních textů ve svých anglických překladech přistupuje k problematice zachování individuálního autorského stylu dvou rozdílných českých autorů a zároveň také analyzuje osobní styl překladatele. Práce se zaměřuje na analýzu románů Saturnin od Zdeňka Jirotky a Myši Natálie Mooshabrové od Ladislava Fukse, které do angličtiny přeložil překladatel Mark Corner. Nejdříve se práce zabývá tématem překladatelského stylu v oblasti translatologie, následně popisuje styly obou autorů a v praktické části analyzuje překlady románů. Nejprve je srovnává s jejich zdrojovými texty a pak posuzuje společné znaky a rozdíly obou překladů.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis examines how a literary translator approaches the recreation of individual writing style of two different Czech authors in his translations of their works into English, as well as analyses the translator's own personal translating style. The analysed novels are Saturnin by Zdeněk Jirotka and Myši Natálie Mooshabrové by Ladislav Fuks, which were translated by the translator Mark Corner. The thesis first provides information about the topic of style in the field of translation studies, then describes the writing styles of the two authors, and in the practical part analyses the two translations, comparing them to their respective source texts, as well as to each other.
