Basic fatures of climate variability in Central Europe since AD 1500 simulated with selected climate models.

Abstract:

Hlavní náplní předkládané diplomové práce je analyzovat schopnost vybraných globálních cirkulačních modelů (GCMs) simulovat kolísání klimatu v prostoru střední Evropy od r. 1500. S ohledem na podobu gridové sítě (rozlišení jen ve stovkách kilometrů) většiny zájmových modelů a rozsah platnosti referenční teplotní řady byla zájmová oblast vytyčena souřadnicemi 45°N – 55°N, 5°E – 20°E. V práci jsou použity běhy modelu ECHO-G (kontrolní běh a experimentální běhy Erik 1, Erik 2, Columbus), teplotní řada simulovaná modelem HadCM3 a ensemble běhů modelu Earth System Model v rámci projektu COSMOS. Pro každý běh byla z vybraných gridů sestavena průměrná teplotní řada střední Evropy, přičemž pracujeme v sezónním rozlišení. Jako základní referenční řada byla použita Dobrovolného teplotní rekonstrukce vytvořená z dokumentárních pramenů. Nejprve byla tato referenční série validována oproti Luterbacherově teplotní rekonstrukci (1500-2002) a řadě HadCRUT3 vytvořené z přístrojových měření (1850-2010). Pomocí statistické analýzy (průměry, rozptyly, trendy, korelace, cykly) hodnotíme, zda jsou některé globální cirkulační modely schopny vyjádřit základní rysy klimatu střední Evropy v posledních stoletích.

Abstract:

The main aim of this work is to analyse the ability of chosen GCMs with available millennium experiments to simulate the climate variability in the Central Europe region since AD 1500. Due to the reference time series and the state of available GCM runs we define the region of interest by coordinates LAT 45°N – 55°N, LONG 5°E – 20°E. The effort is to include the maximum points as possible because the grid cell network of the most GCMs is sparse (resolution in hundreds kilometres). We are going to work with ECHO-G experiments (control run, full forcing experiments Erik1, Erik2, Columbus), HadCM3 climate model experiments and ensemble transient simulations of the COSMOS Earth System Model. For each GCM run from chosen grids we get the average time series for the Central Europe – we work in seasonal resolution. The basic dataset to compare to model simulations was created by Dobrovolný using documentary sources. At first we validate this reference time series against Luterbacher temperature reconstruction and gridded instrumental temperature record (HadCRUT3). Doing a basic statistical analysis (averages, variance, trends, extremes, correlations, cycles) we find out whether there are some GCMs able to represent the basic patterns of the climate variability in Central Europe over the last centuries.
