Impact of increasing regulations in energy sector on functioning and strategy of the company Unipetrol

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je určit vliv růstu cen emisních povolenek na fungování a strategii firmy Unipetrol RPA s.r.o. V posledních letech probíhal v Evropské unii růst cen emisních povolenek. Náplní této práce je analýza vlivu tohoto růstu na rozdílné aspekty fungování firmy Unipetrol. Základní datový soubor tvoří časová řada z posledních třinácti let týkající se cen emisních povolenek a dalších ekonomických ukazatelů výše zmíněné firmy. Prvotní vyhodnocení dat proběhlo deskriptivně-vizuální formou. Očekávání bylo takové, že mezi cenou emisních povolenek a ukazateli firmy by mohl být významný vztah. Tyto závěry byly následně vyhodnoceny a detailně diskutovány v porovnání s výsledky exaktních statistických metod, konkrétně regresní analýzy. Dále byly realizovány rozhovory s vedoucími pracovníky firmy týkající se současné a budoucí strategie. V letech 2017-2021 skupina Unipetrol očekává posílení lidského kapitálu, chce stavět na silné pozice v oblasti petrochemie a předpokládá vybudování maloobchodu budoucnosti. Firma je nucena snižovat emise nebo naopak vynaložit obrovské náklady pro jejich vypouštění. Zjištěné výsledky byly doplněny o poznatky z kvalitativních rozhovorů uskutečněných s vedoucími pracovníky firmy. Tyto rozhovory primárně sloužily k dokreslení a ucelení již získaných dat. Regresní modely neprokázaly žádný významný vztah mezi cenou emisních povolenek a ukazateli firmy. Byl objeven pouze potencionální vztah mezi cenou emisních povolenek a počtem zaměstnanců. Lze tedy říci, že společnost Unipetrol se dokáže vysokým cenám emisních povolenek přizpůsobit a zamezit tak poklesu jejího ekonomického zdraví. Zároveň je třeba zdůraznit, že podle regresních modelů firma může na zvyšující se regulace reagovat snížením počtu zaměstnanců. Je zajímavé, že výsledky regresní analýzy jsou odlišné od informací zjištěných během rozhovoru s vedoucími pracovníky firmy Unipetrol. Tato skutečnost může svědčit o tom, že reálný dopad zvyšujících se environmentálních regulací může být jiný, než jaký předpokládá sama firmy. Přidanou hodnotou práce je vyhodnocení aktivity firmy v návaznosti na výše popsané regulatorní dění a transformaci v oblasti energetiky. Tyto výsledky poslouží jako veřejný zdroj informací využitelný především pro jiné firmy, které se potýkají s podobnými problémy a výzvami jako mnou zkoumaná firma. Přidaná hodnota práce spočívá také v tom, že vyhodnocení strategie firmy Unipetrol poskytne informace veřejnosti o tom, jakým směrem se firma bude v budoucnosti ubírat. Výsledky práce mohou také posloužit pro projekt "Support to the preparation of Territorial Just Transition Plans in the Czech Republic", jehož záměrem je poskytnutí technické podpory k rozvoji hlavních složek územních plánů "spravedlivého" přechodu pro tři regiony těžby uhlí v ČR. Lze konstatovat, že práce rozšiřuje povědomí o dopadech environmentálních regulací na firmu.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to determine the impact of rising emission allowance prices on the operation and strategy of Unipetrol RPA s.r.o. In recent years, the prices of emission allowances have risen in the European Union. The scope of this work is to analyze the impact of this growth on various aspects of the operation of Unipetrol. The basic data set consists of a time series from the last thirteen years concerning the prices of emission allowances and other economic indicators of the above-mentioned company. The initial evaluation of the data took place in a descriptive-visual form. The expectation was that there could be a significant relationship between the price of emission allowances and the company's indicators. These conclusions will then be discussed in detail in comparison with the results of statistical methods, specifically regression analyse. Furthermore, qualitative data concerning the current and future strategy of the company were obtained. In the years 2017 - 2021, the Unipetrol Group expects the strengthening of human capital, wants to build on strong positions in the field of petrochemicals, and expects to build the retail of the future. The company is forced to reduce emissions or, conversely, incur huge costs for their discharge. The results were supplemented by findings from qualitative interviews conducted with company executives. These interviews were primarily used to illustrate and consolidate the data already obtained. Regression models did not show any significant relationship between the price of emission allowances and the company's indicators. Only a potential relationship between the price of emission allowances and the number of employees was discovered. It can therefore be said that Unipetrol is able to adapt to the high prices of emission allowances and thus prevent a decline in its economic health. (Even other studies that dealt with this issue did not reveal the relationship between the price of emission allowances and other indicators using regression models.) The added value of the work is the evaluation of the company's activity in connection with the regulatory events and transformation in the energy sector described above. These results will serve as a public source of information usable mainly for other companies that face similar problems and challenges as the company I researched. The added value of the work also lies in the fact that the evaluation of Unipetrol's strategy will provide information to the public on the direction the company will take in the future. Furthermore, the results of this work can also be used for the project "Support to the preparation of Territorial Just Transition Plans in the Czech Republic", which aims to provide technical support for the development of the main components of land use plans for a "fair" transition for three coal mining regions in the Czech Republic. It can be stated that the work raises awareness about the impacts of environmental regulations on companies.
