The Concept of "Nation" in the Centemporary Discourse of the Czech Social Sciences

Abstract:

Práce se snaží analyzovat koncept národa v současné české politologii, sociologii a humánní geografii. Čerpá z impaktovaných článků a monografií daných oborů z období let 1992 až 2012. Cílem je zjistit z jakých myšlenkových směrů čeští odborníci vycházejí a podat přehled jejich postojů, v otázce konceptu národa. Hlavní část práce spočívá v analýze a popisu článků jednotlivých autorů, z jejichž srovnání vychází následující zjištění. Většina českých odborníků čerpá z, aktuálně v akademickém světě prosazovaných, modernistických teorií konceptu národa a to převážně z myšlenek Ernesta Gellnera, Benedicta Andersona a Anthony Smithe. Všichni tři zmínění autoři považují homogenní jazyk a kulturu za klíčový prvek národa. Co se týče vlastních názorů českých politologů, sociologů a humánních geografů, ti se v převážné většině případů shodují v definici národa jako skupiny lidí se společným územím, historií, jazykem, kulturou a identitou. Ze zkoumaných textů také můžeme usuzovat, že čeští autoři se zabývají více i občanským a etnickým principem národa, jeho pozitivitou a negativitou. A za nebezpečnou někteří z nich považují ideologii národa a nacionalismu, jež by mohla, jak tomu bylo v minulosti, rozpoutat další konflikty.

Abstract:

This thesis is trying to analyse the concept of nation in contemporary Czech political science, sociology and human geography. The thesis is based on impact papers and books written in 1992-2012. The aim is to find out which school of thoughts are followed by Czech experts and to overview their attitude to the concept of nation. The main part of the thesis is based on the analysis and description of the particular papers. Following findings are inferred from the comparison of these papers. The majority of the Czech experts follow the modernistic theories, actually asserted in the academic environment, especially the ideas of Ernest Gellner, Benedict Anderson and Anthony Smith. All of those three mentioned authors consider homogeneous language and culture as the key stone of nation. According to their own opinion Czech political scientists, sociologists and human geographers mostly define nation as a group of people with a shared area, history, language, culture and identity. From the researched texts we can also conclude that Czech authors deal with civic and ethnic principle of nation and positivity and negativity of this principle. Some of the authors consider the ideology of nation and nationalism dangerous. This ideology could be source of conflicts as it was in the past.
