Women in Islam; The Cultural Apsect of the Antagonism between Religion and the Values of a Modern Civilisation

Abstract:

Islám je náboženstvím, které má několik základních pravidel. Ta čerpají jak z náboženství, která ho předcházela, tak z vlastní posvátné knihy Koránu, tak také ze záznamů o životě, skutcích a výrocích svého Proroka, který je vnímán jako exemplární příklad věřícího člověka. Tato pravidla se v muslimské kultuře neprojevují jenom ve víře a náboženských rituálech, ale také ve společenském, politickém a právním řádu většiny islámských zemí. Jedním z důsledků této provázanosti víry a veřejného života je ta skutečnost, že ženy v muslimské společnosti mají předepsané oblečení, místy jsou vyloučeny z politického a někdy i společenského a náboženského života, a celkově nemají tolik práv a svobod jako jejich muži. To je však ve značném kontrastu k základným hodnotám rovnosti a svobody rozhodování, které zastává západní kultura. Jestli je však postavení žen v islámu skutečně tak špatné a z čeho pramení rozpor a rozdíly ve vnímání žen v islámském světě a na „západě“ je otázka, kterou se tato práce snaží analyzovat, objasnit a zhodnotit.

Abstract:

Islam is a religion, which follows certain basic principles. These principles originate from other religions, which preceded it, from its own holy book, the Qur’an and from the records of the life, the deeds and the sayings of its prophet, who is considered to be an exemplary case of a true believer. These principles, however, do not facilitate themselves only in the religion and its rituals. They are part of the very social, political and legal fabric of most of the Islamic countries. One of the results of this interconnection between faith and civic life is the fact that women in Muslim culture have a strict dress code, in some cases, they are not allowed to participate in the political and sometimes the social or even religious life of the community and generally do not enjoy as many freedoms and rights as their husbands do. This is in considerable contrast to the basic values of equality and self-determination, cherished and upheld by the western civilization, which considers itself to be the current pinnacle of social evolution and human civilization. Where the differences between the perception of women in the Islamic world and the “west” actually come from and whether the role and stance of women in Islam is indeed so inappropriate, are the questions, which this thesis will attempt to analyze, clarify and answer.
