Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with endangered languages of the British Isles. The thesis focuses on Celtic languages, specifically on Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic, Manx Gaelic, and then on Cornish and Welsh. The aim of the thesis is to examine their position in the past, to find the causes that led to their disappearance, to present the current position, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the revitalization attempts. Based on data about the number of speakers obtained from studies and surveys, their subsequent comparison, the role of individual languages in education, and public attitudes, it is estimated which languages have a chance to be retained. Ultimately, suggestions which could the most effectively lead to an improvement in the situation of the languages concerned are stated.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá ohroženými jazyky na Britských ostrovech. Práce pojednává o keltských jazycích, konkrétně o irštině, skotské gaelštině, manštině, a dále o kornštině a velštině. Cílem práce je prozkoumat jejich postavení v minulosti, najít příčiny, které vedly k jejich mizení, představit jejich současnou situaci a zhodnotit účinnost podniknutých pokusů o zachránění. Na základě dat o počtech mluvčích získných ze studií a průzkumů, jejich následného porovnání, roli jednotlivých jazyků ve školství a přístupu veřejnosti je odhadnuto, které jazyky mají šanci na zachování. V závěru jsou zmíněny návrhy, které by mohly nejefektivněji vést ke zlepšení situace daných jazyků.
