Thermal profile during hibernation of bats with and without WNS symptoms

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se nejdříve věnuji problematice onemocnění „White-nose“ syndromu. Jako původce WNS je identifikována plíseň Pseudogymnoascus destructans, která napadá netopýry v období hluboké hibernace. Je popsán průběh šíření v Severní Americe a výskyt v Evropě. Také jsou popsány vlastnosti původce onemocnění a je popsán průběh onemocnění samotného. Ve stručnosti je popsán proces hibernace, který je hlavním faktorem pro nákazu WNS. Ve vlastním výzkumu jsou sledovány dvě lokality pro tepelné události, které jsou specifické pozorovatelně zvýšenou teplotou vůči okolí. Štoly pod Jelení cestou s vysokou prevalencí P. destructans (2012- 59,8%) a Kateřinská jeskyně s prevalencí nízkou (2012- 5%). Je popsána metodika monitoringu zimujících netopýrů a následné zpracování dat. Výsledky nejsou kompletní, neboť výzkum stále pokračuje. Byla prokázaná pozitivní korelace mezi délkou tepelné události a zaznamenanými tepelnými maximy. Stejně tak byla prokázána korelace mezi délkou tepelné události a počtem netopýrů podílejících se na tepelné změně. Byla odhalena shoda u kratších událostí z obou lokalit v tepelných proměnných. Delší tepelné události z obou lokalit se v tepelných proměnných lišily. Ve Štolách pod Jelení cestou, kde je prevalence P. destructans vyšší, byly tepelné události delší a s vyššími teplotními maximy než v Kateřinské jeskyni, kde je prevalence P. destructans výrazně nižší.

Abstract:

At the beginning of this bachelor thesis I focused on the issue of “White-nose” syndrome. Pseudogymnoascus desctructans was identified as the cause of WNS, a fungus which infects hibernating bats. The process of distribution in North America was described as well as the presence in Europe. Characterisation of WNS causing fungus and description of the disease are included. The process of hibernation was briefly described as well, because it is a main factor for the WNS infection. The research is based on monitoring of two locations for thermal events. Thermal events are specific with observable higher temperature than surrounding environment. First location is Štoly pod Jelení cestou with high prevalence of P. destructans (2012- 59,8%). Second location is Kateřinská jeskyně with low prevalence (2012- 5%). I described monitoring methods of hibernating bats and processing of obtained data. Results are not complete because research is still in process. The positive correlation between the duration of a thermal event and thermal peaks was proven. The positive correlation between the duration of a thermal event and the number of event participating bats was proven. The difference between short thermal events, from both locations, in thermal variables was not proven. The difference between longer thermal events, from both locations, in thermal variables was proven. There were longer thermal events with higher thermal peaks in Štoly pod Jelení cestou (high prevalence of P. destructans) than in Kateřinská jeskyně (low prevalence of P. destructans).
