John Stuart Mill from the Point of View of Ecological Economics

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá myšlením britského klasického ekonoma Johna Stuarta Milla (1806-1873) z pohledu kritiků současné neoklasické ekonomické teorie. První kapitola pojednává o reflexi Millovy osoby a díla v dnešní ekonomické literatuře, čímž přibližuje pohled, kterým většina současných ekonomů Milla vnímá (typický představitel klasické ekonomie). Druhá kapitola charakterizuje jednak dobu, v níž J. S. Mill žil (z hlediska faktorů, jež mohly nějakým způsobem ovlivnit jeho myšlení), jednak názorové působení konkrétních osob, se kterými se během svého života setkal. Třetí kapitola se snaží podat ucelený obraz o alternativních prvcích Millova ekonomického myšlení. Pojednává o jeho postojích k přítomnosti etické volby v rámci ekonomie (jejíž dílčí aspekty představují distribuce bohatství, sociální spravedlnost a ženská práva), k problematice hospodářského růstu (v jejímž rámci se zmiňuje o jeho koncepci stacionárního stavu) a k ideji družstevního podnikání (Millův ideální hospodářský systém – „družstevní kapitalismus“). Rozsah práce je 11 036slov.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the thinking of British classical economist John Stuart Mill (1806 – 1873) from the perspective of the critics of contemporary neoclassical theory. The first chapter focuses on a reflection of Mill´s work in some current economic texts. These tend to emphasise Mill´s more conventional ideas and often portray him as a typical classical economist. The second chapter provides a characteristic of Mill´s times (from the point of view of factors which influenced his thinking) and of the opinions of important people in his life. The third chapter tries to draw together the „alternative“ factors in Mill´s economic thought. It highlights his emphasis on the importance of ethics in economics (especially as regards the distribution of wealth, social equity and women´s rights), his attitude to economic growth (including his specific concept of the stationary state) and his ideal of co-operative enterprise (Mill´s ideal economic system: „co-operative capitalism“). Thesis has 11 036 words.
