Wheelchair users and internet use

Abstract:

The subject of the submitted bachelor thesis is the use of internet and its influence on the quality of life and adaptiation to disability of wheelchair users. The theoretical part of this work focuses briefly on the topic of life with a physical disability, then on the psychological aspects of internet use and finally on areas and concepts where internet could be useful to wheelchair users. The content of the research part is an explorative qualitative research focused on exploring the relationship between internet use, adaptation to disability and the quality of life of wheelchair users. Using the method of grounded theory, the analysis produced some categories and their relationships. The key categories linked to the category "Adaptation to a life using a wheelchair" are the categories "Anonymity of the internet", "Revelation of the disability" and "Internet use". The attitude of wheelchair users concerning the anonymity of the internet as well as the moment of revelation of the disability on the internet determine the amount of their adaptation to disabilty. Well adapted individuals are not concerned with revealing their disability on the internet and they don't act anonymously, but they don't feel the need to present their disability in casual conversation. A psychologically important category is "Internet use" and it's subcategory "Percieved meaning". Almost half of the wheelchair users in this resarch percieved internet as "freedom", broadening of possibilities, a helper. This explorative resarch opened the path to other researches in this field which should be beneficial to the rehabilitation process and the adaptation to disability of wheelchair users and other people with a psysical disability. Exploring the internet as "freedom for wheelchair users" and the influence of internet use on self-efficacy can be stimulating.

Abstract:

Témou predkladanej bakalárskej práce je používanie internetu a jeho vplyv na kvalitu života a adaptáciu vozíčkarov na život s handicapom. Teoretická časť práce sa v krátkosti venuje problematike života s telesným postihnutím, ďalej psychologickým aspektom používania internetu a nakoniec oblastiam a konceptom, v rámci ktorých by mohol byť interent pre vozíčkarov prínosom. Obsahom výskumnej časti je exploratívny kvalitatívny výskum zameraný na preskúmanie vzťahov medzi používaním internetu, adaptáciou na handicap a kvalitou života vozíčkarov. Z analýzy metódou zakotvenej teórie boli určené kategórie a ich súvislosti. Kľúčové kategórie, ktoré majú súvislosť s kategóriou „Adaptácia na život na vozíčku“, sú kategórie „Anonymita internetu“, „Odhalenie handicapu“ a „Používanie internetu“. Postoj vozíčkarov k využívaniu anonymnosti internetu, takisto ako k momentu odhalenia handicapu na internete, určuje mieru ich adaptácie na hadicap. Dobre adaptovaní jedinci pritom s odhalením handicapu na internete nemajú problém a na internete vystupujú neanonymne, avšak nepociťujú ani potrebu svoj handicap v bežnej konverzácii prezentovať. Dôležitou z psychologického hľadiska bola kategória „Používanie internetu a jej subkategória „Vnímaný význam“. Takmer polovica vozíčkarov z výskumného súboru vnímala internet ako „slobodu“, rozšírenie možností, pomocníka. Exploratívny výskum otvoril cestu ďalším výskumom v tejto oblasti, ktoré by mohli byť prínosom pre proces rehabilitácie a adaptácie vozíčkarov a iných ľudí s telesným postihnutím. Ako nosné sa javí pokračujúce skúmanie internetu ako „slobody pre vozíčkarov“ a vplyvu používania internetu na vedomie vlastnej účinnosti.
