Visuals for teaching culture in German language textbooks

Abstract:

Disertační práce je zaměřena na problematiku vizuálních prostředků pro výuku reálií v učebnicích němčiny. Teoretická část se vztahuje nejprve k obecnějším (širším) souvislostem řešené problematiky (kurikulárním teoriím, teorii učebnice), na něž navazují kapitoly pojednávající o vizuálních prostředcích a reáliích ve výuce cizích jazyků. Empirická část zahrnuje dvě výzkumná šetření. Cílem prvního (kvantitativně koncipovaného) výzkumného šetření bylo zjistit, jaké typy, obsahy a funkce vizuálních prostředků pro výuku reálií se vyskytují v učebnicích němčiny. Výzkumný vzorek tvořily čtyři učebnice, které jsou určeny pro výuku němčiny jako druhého cizího jazyka na 2. stupni ZŠ. Výsledky kvantitativní analýzy poukázaly na některé společné tendence učebnic, jako je dominantní zastoupení realistických vizuálních prostředků a každodenních témat prezentovaných vizuálními prostředky. Naopak výrazné rozdíly mezi učebnicemi byly zaznamenány zejména u funkcí vizuálních prostředků. Cílem druhého (kvalitativně koncipovaného) výzkumného šetření bylo zjistit, jakou funkci učitelé připisují vizuálním prostředkům pro výuku reálií v učebnicích němčiny, za jakým účelem je využívají a jak je hodnotí. Výpovědi získané z polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s šesti učiteli potvrdily některá zjištění z kvantitativní analýzy učebnic. V rámci shrnutí výsledků obou šetření jsou na základě zjištěných nedostatků učebnic z posuzovaného hlediska nabídnuta doporučení pro tvorbu učebnic.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the topic of visuals for teaching about German speaking countries in German as a foreign language textbooks. In the theoretical part of the thesis, theoretical concepts related to the topic are described (selected curriculum theories, textbook theory, visuals and teaching culture. In the empirical part, the research is divided into two investigations: a quantitative and a qualitative analysis. The first research aim was to investigate what types, functions and contents of visuals for teaching about German speaking countries are to be identified in German language textbooks. To fulfill the first aim a quantitative analysis focusing on visuals for teaching culture in German language textbooks was conducted. The research sample was comprised of four German language textbooks which are used in Czech lower secondary schools. The results of the analysis indicated some common features of visuals of all the selected textbooks, especially concerning the types. The most frequent types of visuals are realistic visuals (photographs) and the most frequent presented topics are related to everyday life. However, there are some differences between the textbooks coming from Czech and German publishers. For instance, functions of the analysed visuals differ according to the type of activity they occur in. The second research aim following the first one was to investigate how teachers evaluate visuals for teaching about German speaking countries in the textbook they use, which ought to bring another (more practical) perspective to the selected topic. To achieve the second research aim a qualitative analysis was conducted, based on the data from semi-structured interviews with six German language teachers. All in all, results confirmed some findings of the first investigation. Both analyses pointed out some strong and weak points of the visuals in the selected textbooks. Summarizing the outcomes of both analyses, there are several recommendations for textbook design which can be offered.
