Tension between Traditional and Modern Live Style in Native American Fiction

The tension between tradition and modern times in Native American fiction. This bachelor thesis will analyze the tensions of young Native Americans between the traditional live in reservation and modern times in the work of ALEXIE Sherman: Flight (2007) and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (2007), his autobiographical novel which won The National Book Award price for Young People´s literature in 2007.

Abstract:

The overall aim of my bachelor thesis is to analyze the importance of traditional Native American family in two novels for young adult readers Flight and Absolutely Truth Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. During reading and studying further sources concerning Alexie's work the point of my theses shifted towards the importance of knowledge of one´s roots in the terms of forming one's identity and sense of belonging to certain social group. This theme is very strongly noticeable throughout all Alexie's work. Zits, the narrator and main character in Flight, is at one point desperate To find out his own roots to be able to understand where he comes from and where he belongs to. His story also refers to several historical events that may answer some of the questions in term of identity and belonging. To sum up the reason for deflection in theme of my bachelor theses is that both adolescents deal with the importance of family and particularly father in terms of forming identity during the time of growing up. Therefore I would prefer to rename this bachelor papers to: Identity and Belonging in Sherman Alexie's Novels for Young Adult Readers

Tato bakalářská práce se snaží analyzovat důležitost tradičního způsobu života Amerických indiánů ve dvou románech pro mladé čtenáře Shermana Alexieho, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian a Flight. V průběhu čtení a studování dalších zdrojů a materiálů týkajících se Alexieho děl se zaměření mé práce posunulo směrem k důležitosti znalostí vlastních kořenů. Ta, stejně jako sounáležitosti s určitou sociální skupinou, může hrát významnou roli při vytváření identity dospívajícího jedince. Toto téma je velmi silně zastoupeno v celém Alexieho literárním díle. Zits, hlavní postava a vypravěč v románu Flight, zoufale hledá vlastní kořeny, aby byl schopen pochopit, odkud pochází a kam náleží. V jeho příběhu se také objevuje několik historických událostí, které mohou hrát důležitou roli při zodpovězení těchto otázek. Oba dospívající chlapci řeší otázku identity, sounáležitosti, důležitosti rodiny, zvláště pak role otce. A právě to byl hlavní důvod, proč jsem se částečně odchýlila od původního zadání bakalářské práce. Z tohoto důvodu bych název této práce pozměnila na: Identita a sounáležitost v díle Shermena Alexiho pro mladé čtenáře.
