Graphomotor difficulties in relation to the self-concept of fourth grade children

Abstract:

Dysgrafie je specifická porucha učení, která postihuje grafický projev jedince (psaní, kreslení, rýsování). Výzkum dysgrafie i jejích psychologických konsekvencí je spíše upozaděný a diagnostika v českém prostředí postrádá objektivní nástroj ke zhodnocení grafomotorických dovedností. Práce prověřuje souvislost subjektivně hodnocených grafomotorických obtíží (HPSQ–C), akademického sebepojetí a sociálního a emočního sebepojetí (P–H 2). Ve druhé části je explorativně zkoumán vztah objektivně (kvantitativní analýza online písma) a subjektivně hodnocené grafomotoriky za účelem objektivizace diagnostiky v českém prostředí (v rámci výzkumu GA18-16835S) a pozdější možnosti výzkumu objektivně hodnocené grafomotoriky a sebepojetí. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 66 žáků čtvrtých tříd. Korelační analýza prokázala statisticky signifikantní negativní vztah mezi subjektivním hodnocením grafomotorických obtíží a akademickým sebepojetím (Spearmanovo Rhó= 0,245; r 0,05). Souvislost se sociálním a emočním sebepojetím nebyla signifikantní. Z regresní analýzy vyplývá, že vytvořený model 5 spolehlivě predikuje 23,6 % rozptylu v míře subjektivně hodnocených grafomotorických obtíží (HPSQ–C) (F=6,386; p  0,05). Nejsilnějším prediktorem je výška tahu ve vzduchu (beta=0,345) a zrychlení na povrchu (beta=0,226) u úloh vyžadujících schopnost mentální rotace. Ostatní expertně vytvořené modely (navržené supervizorem této studie) nebyly signifikantní. Výsledky nezobecňujeme na populaci z důvodu mnohých limitů této práce.

Abstract:

Dysgraphia is a specific learning disability which affects graphic expression (writing, drawing, drafting) of an individual. The research of dysgraphia and its psychological consequences is rather sidelined and diagnostics of dysgraphia in the Czech Republic lacks an objective tool for assessment of graphomotor skills. This study investigates the relationship amongst subjectively assessed graphomotor difficulties (HPSQ–C), academic self–concept, and social and emotional self–concept (P–H 2). In the second part of the study the relationship between objectively (quantitative analysis of online handwriting) and subjectively assessed graphomotor skills is exploratively examined in order to make diagnostics of dysgraphia more objective in the Czech Republic. The study can also serve as a source for future research of the relationship between objectively assessed graphomotor skills and self–concept. There were 66 fourth-grade children participants in this study. Correlation analysis showed statistically significant negative correlation between subjective assessment of graphomotor difficulties and academic self–concept (Spearman‘s Rho= 0,245; r 0,05). Correlation between subjective assessment of graphomotor difficulties and social and emotional self–concept was not significant. Regression analysis showed that the newly created model 5 reliably predicts 23,6 % of variance of subjectively assessed graphomotor difficulties (HPSQ–C) (F=6,386; p  0,05). The strongest predictor is the height of the stroke in air (beta=0,345) and the acceleration on surface (beta=0,226) in tasks which require the ability of mental rotation. Other models which were created by the supervisor of this study were not significant. We do not generalize the results of this study on the whole population of fourth-grade children due to several limitations of this study.
