Selected factors related to physical objectification and self-objectification

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá objektivizací žen, sebeobjektivizací a přijímáním mýtů o znásilnění. Hlavním cílem studie bylo zjistit, zda fenomény zaměřené na vnímání ostatních žen (objektivizace, přijímání mýtů o znásilnění) souvisejí s časem stráveným hraním počítačových her. Studie dále zkoumala souvislost mezi objektivizací žen a sebeobjektivizcí a zda existují genderové rozdíly v jednotlivých fenoménech. Data studie byla sesbírána pomocí dotazníkového šetření na vzorku 129 vysokoškolských studentů. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 73 mužů a 56 žen ve věku od 18 do 29 let (M = 21,5; MD = 21; SD = 2). Výsledky studie podpořily hypotézu, že lidé, kteří tráví více času hraním počítačových her, více objektivizují ostatní ženy. Potvrzena byla také hypotéza, že objektivizace ostatních žen pozitivně koreluje se sebeobjektivizací. Nebyl nalezen signifikantní vztah mezi časem stráveným hraním videoher a přijímáním mýtů o znásilnění. Na základě našich zjištění lze usuzovat, že existují genderové rozdíly v objektivizaci ostatních žen a v přijímání mýtů o znásilnění. V sebeobjektivizaci nebyl nalezen signifikantní rozdíl mezi pohlavími.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with objectification of women, self-objectification and rape myth acceptance. The main goal of this study was to determine a connection between phenomens focused on perceiving other women (objectification, rape myth acceptance) and time spent playing video games. The study also investigated a connection between objectification of women and self-objectification and whether there are differences in gender. Data were collected through an online survey on a sample of 129 university students, counting 73 men and 56 women with age ranging from 18 to 29 years (M = 21,5; MD = 21; SD = 2). Results supported the hypothesis, that people who spend more time playing video games, are more likely to objectify other women. Findings also supported a hypothesis that objectification of other women positively correlates with self-objectification. There was not found a significant relationship between time spent playing video games and rape myth acceptance. Based on our findings it is possible to assume that there are differences in objectification of other women and rape myth acceptance depending on gender. No significant gender differences were found regarding self-objectification.
