Food Security in Sweden and the Czech Republic

Abstract:

In the given diploma thesis, the author has a goal to properly assess food security in Sweden and the Czech Republic based on its four essential pillars: availability, access, utilization and stability. The aim is to identify the reasons and factors of higher food security index in Sweden compared to the Czech Republic, develop a questionnaire that could fairly evaluate food security in the country and conduct it in both countries to formulate the final recommendations for achieving and maintaining high food security. In the first part of the diploma thesis, there is a literature review presented with the collection of the data which is a part of qualitative method. There is an overview of food security in Sweden and Czechia, its specifics and challenges in both countries. In the practical part the quantitative and qualitative methods used to present comparative research of Sweden's and Czechia's profiles in terms of food security. Data visualisation method is employed to examine trends and patterns of a suite of food security indicators and development of GFSI (Global Food Security Index) within 2012-2023 in both countries. There is a development and conduction of a questionnaire to evaluate food security situation in Sweden and Czechia from four main perspectives (availability, access, utilization and stability). The final food security score is calculated for each country based on the respondents’ answers. A thematic analysis is used to examine the outcomes.
