Information Extraction from Restaurant Menu

Abstract:

Předkládaná magisterská práce je příspěvkem věnujícím se extrakci informací. Jejím předmětem je návrh systému umožňujícího automatické získávání strukturovaných dat z volného textu jídelních lístků (v českém jazyce), a to s výhledem, že by takto získaná data či navržený systém mohly být podkladem pro další experimenty a vývoj, jenž by se zasadil o možnost lepší klasifikace, správy a využití dat v oblasti stravování a potravin, např. k lepšímu filtrování jídel nebo analýze využití surovin. Úvodní kapitoly zpracovávají teoretická východiska práce: vymezují úlohu extrakce informací, věnují se jejímu usouvztažnění k vědeckým oborům, uvádí v kontext historii úlohy, vývoj tematického zaměření i používaných metod. V ústřední, praktické části je popsán návrh a zpracování systému na extrakci informací s využitím pravidlového přístupu, word embeddings a databáze receptů. Popsáno je také vybudování použité datové sady receptů pomocí web scrapingu. Popsaný přístup je opatřen komentářem ke své úspěšnosti, limitům a možnostem dalšího vylepšování. Práce potvrzuje, že průsečíku extrakce informací, oblasti stravování a práce s daty nebyla dosud věnována důkladná pozornost a jeho potenciál zatím čeká na vyčerpání.

Abstract:

The present Master’s thesis contributes to the field of information extraction. The thesis aims to design a system enabling automatic extraction of structured data from free text of restaurant menus (in the Czech language), with the prospect that such obtained data or the proposed system could form a basis for further experiments and development aimed at improving classification, management, and utilization of data in the food domain, e.g., for better food filtering or analysis of ingredient usage. The opening chapters discuss the theoretical background of the thesis: they define the task of information extraction, its relation to scientific disciplines, historical context, development of thematic focus, and methods used. In the practical part, the design and implementation of the information extraction system are described, utilizing a rule-based approach, word embeddings, and a recipe database. The construction of the used recipe database through web scraping is also detailed. The approach described is accompanied by a commentary on its success, limitations, and opportunities for further improvement. The thesis confirms that the intersection of information extraction, the food domain, and data handling has not yet received thorough attention, and its potential is still awaiting full exploitation.
