Mass spectrometry of nanomaterials and clusters

Abstract:

Tato Disertace se zabývá studiem některých vybraných nanomateriálů a chalkogenidů laserovou desorpční ionizací (LDI) a matricovou laserovou desorpční ionizací (MALDI) za pomoci matric, na přístroji vybaveném kvadrupólovou pastí a hmotnostním spektrometrem s analysou doby letu (QIT TOF-MS) a také aplikací dalších analytických technik. Byly diskutovány aplikace těchto nanomateriálů. Nanomateriály (AgTe, AuAgTe a AuFe) byly připraveny různými metodami a AgAsS2 sklo bylo syntetizováno technikou tavení v inertní atmosféře. Aplikací LDI (pomocí pulzního dusíkového laseru při 337 nm) generované klastry z těchto materiálů v plynné fázi byly analyzovány za použití QIT TOF-MS. Stechiometrie klastrů byla určována porovnáním experimentálních a teoretických izotopových vzorů pomocí software Launchpad (Kompact verze 2.3.4, 2003) společnosti Kratos Ltd (Shimadzu). V prvních dvou případech (AgTe a AuAgTe) adsorpce nanočástic zlata nebo stříbra na teluru vedla k přípravě nového druhu AuAgTe/AgTe nano-kompozitu. LDI z AuAgTe nano-kompozitu poskytla 9 klastrů (Agq, Ter), 40 binárních (AupTer a AgpTer) a 78 ternárních (AupAgqTer) klastrů. LDI Ag-Te nano-kompozitu vede ke generování 11 mono-elementárních a 52 binárních klastrů. Stechiometrie mnoha nových klastrů AupAgqTer a AgqTer byla popsána poprvé. Laserová ablace AgAsS2 skla vede ke tvorbě 139 klastrů s jednotkovým nábojem. Ve struktuře AgAsS2 skla byla zjištěna tvorba nano-zrn bohatých na stříbro, a to s použitím TEM analýzy a výsledky byly ověřeny pomocí QIT TOF-MS. Nanočástice Au-Fe (NPs) a ve formě nano-květin (nano-flowers, NFs) byly syntetizovány z vodného roztoku HAuCl4 za použití nerezové oceli jako redukčního činidla anebo za současné aplikace HF plazmatu při atmosférickém tlaku. Závěrem je možno říci, že laserová desorpční ionizace s hmotnostní spektrometrií QIT TOF je silnou technikou pro tvorbu a analýzu nových sloučenin. Do určité míry tato technika poskytuje důležité informace pro objasnění strukturních elementů studovaných materiálů. Výsledky této práce mohou napomoci porozumět základní struktuře studovaných materiálů a tak být užitečné pro vývoj nových materiálů.

Abstract:

The objective of this research is to study the selected nanomaterials and chalcogenides by Laser Desorption Ionization (LDI)/Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI) with Quadrupole Ion Trap Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (QIT ToF - MS) and other analytical techniques that are discussed in detail in further sections. The applications of these nanomaterials have also been discussed in detail. The nanomaterials, namely AgTe, AuAgTe, and AuFe, were prepared by different methods; and AgAsS2 glass was synthesized by melt-quench technique in inert atmosphere. LDI (using pulsed nitrogen laser at 337 nm) generated clusters from these materials in gas phase were analyzed by QIT TOF - MS. The stoichiometry of these clusters was determined by comparing experimental and theoretical isotopic patterns using Launchpad software (Kompact version 2.3.4, 2003) from Kratos Analytical Ltd (Shimadzu). Adsorption of gold and/or silver nanoparticles on tellurium leads to the formation of a new kind of AuAgTe/AgTe nano-composite. The LDI of AuAgTe nano-composite yielded 9 unary (Agq, Ter), 40 binary (AupTer and AgpTer) and 78 ternary (AupAgqTer) clusters. The LDI of Ag-Te nano-composite leads to the formation of 11 unary and 52 binary clusters. The stoichiometry of these novel AupAgqTer and AgqTer clusters was reported for the first time. The AgAsS2 glass leads to the formation of 139 singly charged clusters when ablated. The formation of silver-rich nano-grains during synthesis of AgAsS2 glass was identified using TEM analysis and verified by QIT TOF - MS. The Au-Fe nanoparticles (NPs) and/or nanoflowers (NFs) on the other hand were synthesized from aqueous HAuCl4 solution using stainless steel as reducing agent and/or HF atmospheric plasma. Laser desorption ionization with QIT TOF mass spectrometry was determined to be a powerful technique for generation and analysis of novel nanomaterials. This technique also provides insightful structural elucidation of the synthesized novel nanomaterials. The detailed results from this dissertation will help in understanding the primary structure of the nanomaterials for the development of novel materials.
