Autonomy support in toddlers: The attachment theory perspective

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá podporou autonomie, kterou matky poskytují svým dětem, v kontextu citové vazby. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jak se míra poskytované autonomie liší podle jednotlivých typů vazby. Data pro tuto studii pochází z projektu IVMDR Yummy mummy. Konkrétně byla využita videa, na kterých matky s dětmi ve věku 13 až 17 měsíců pracují na úkolu, který je příliš těžký na to, aby ho děti zvládly samy a k jehož splnění je zapotřebí pomoc matky. Matky a děti z těchto videí zároveň absolvovaly Strange Situation proceduru (SSP) a na základě toho byl dětem určen typ vazby. Míra autonomie byla zjišťována analyzováním videí pomocí pozorovacího schématu. Chování matky zde bylo posuzováno na čtyřech škálách v rozmezí od 1 (nepodporující autonomii) do 5 (velmi podporující autonomii). Pro usnadnění kódování jsou také přidány kontrolní škály pro kontrolující chování a nezapojující se chování. Celkové skóre podpory autonomie vzniklo zprůměrováním. Analýza dat probíhala porovnáváním průměrného skóre podpory autonomie mezi skupinami podle vazby a byla k ní využita analýza rozptylu s jedním kategorickým prediktorem. Největší míra podpory autonomie byla pozorována u matek s jistou vazbou, nicméně nebyl nalezen příliš velký rozdíl mezi skupinami s jistou vazbou a úzkostnou vazbou. Oproti tomu byl nalezen jistý rozdíl mezi skupinou s jistou vazbou a skupinou s vyhýbavou vazbou. Při analýze rozptylu ale tyto výsledky nevyšly statisticky signifikantně, za což může pravděpodobně příliš malý vzorek.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the autonomy support provided by mothers to their children in the context of attachment. The aim of the study was to investigate how autonomy support differs according to different attachment styles. The data for this study comes from the IVMDR Yummy mummy project. Specifically, videos in which mothers and children aged 13 to 17 months worked on a task that was too difficult for the child to do on its own and requires the assistance of the mother were used. Mothers and children from these videos also underwent the Strange Situation Procedure (SSP), which was used to determine the attachment style of children. The degree of autonomy support was assessed by analyzing videos using an observation scheme. The mother's behavior was assessed on four scales ranging from 1 (not supportive of autonomy) to 5 (highly supportive of autonomy). Control scales for controlling behavior and disengagement behavior were also added to facilitate coding. The overall score of autonomy support was calculated by averaging the scores. Data analysis involved comparing the average scores of autonomy support between the groups based on attachment styles, using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with one categorical predictor. The highest level of autonomy support was observed among mothers of children with secure attachment, although the difference between the secure attachment group and the anxious attachment group was not eminent. In contrast, a certain difference was found between the secure attachment group and the avoidant attachment group. However, in the analysis of variance, these results were not statistically significant, which is probably due to the small sample.
