Imagining the End: Analysis of Post-Apocalyptic Genre

Abstract:

In this thesis it is attempted to outline what constitutes post-apocalyptic genre and what makes world-end scenarios so appealing to general public. It is discussed what constitutes post-apocalyptic genre conventions that have been derived from the exisiting conventions of horror and science fiction. Furthermore, post-apocalyptic theory of trauma proposed by James Berger is being discussed. On the example of Rihcard Matheson's novel I Am Legend (1954) and its first film adaptation The Last Man on Earth (dir. Ubaldo Ragona, 1964) it is proposed to look at post-apocalyptic representations as containing, and being themselves, symptoms of post-traumatic experiences.
