Czech and English titles of books: a translation study

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to perform a translation study. At the beginning this thesis provides an overview of the process of translation and selected translation methods, it also includes commentary on book titles, their nature and functions. The corpus used for the analysis consists of three hundred books that are most often read books in the Czech Republic translated into Czech from English. The analysis showed that the most common approach of Czech translators towards translating English titles into Czech is translating titles literally or with some semantic changes and methods such as adaptation or providing a new title are used rarely.

Cílem této bakalářské práce je provést translatologickou analýzu. V prvních kapitolách práce pojednává o procesu překládání a vybraných překladatelských metodách a obsahuje komentář ke knižním titulům, jejich podstatě i funkcím. Korpus, který je použit ke studii, se skládá z 300 nejčtenějších knih v ČR, které byly přeloženy z angličtiny. Analýza korpusu ukázala, že nejčastěji se tituly knih do češtiny překládají doslovně nebo s určitými zásahy do obsahu titulu, a metody, jako jsou adaptace nebo poskytnutí úplně nového titulu, jsou používány jen mimořádně.
