The effect of sibling constellation on academic achievement

Abstract:

Tématem výzkumu je ověření kauzality vztahu sourozeneckých konstelací v procesu dosahování vzdělanostních úspěchů. Možnost, že existují další proměnné, které jsou v příčinné souvislosti se sourozeneckými konstelacemi a zároveň životními úspěchy jedince, poměrně dlouhou dobu opomíjena. Významný obrat v uvažování o tomto vztahu lze připsat až alternativní teorii, která otevírá nový pohled na determinanty intelektuálního vývoje a studijních úspěchů a představuje teoretickou a empirickou výzvu pro současný sociálně vědní výzkum. Ověření efektu přítomnosti jednoho a více sourozenců v domácnosti na studijní výsledky je provedeno prostřednictvím OLS regrese průřezových dat PISA 2003. Výsledky lineární regresní analýzy ukazují, že efekt sourozenců je statisticky nevýznamný. Z výsledků studie však nelze usuzovat konečné závěry o efektu sourozeneckých konstelací a je potřeba provést komplexnější analýzu pomocí sofistikovanějších analytických strategií.

Abstract:

The theme of the research is to verify the causality of sibling constellation relations in the process of achieving educational success. The possibility that there are other variables which are causally connected with sibling constellations and success of an individual at the same time has been ignored for a relatively long time. It is possible to attribute a significant turnover concerning this relation to the alternative theory which introduces a new view of the determinants of intellectual development and study success and represents a theoretic and empirical challenge for the current social science research. The verification of the effect of the presence of one or more siblings in a household upon study results is performed through the OLS regression of the PISA 2003 cross-sectional data. The results of the descriptive regression analysis show that the effect of siblings is statistically insignificant. However, it is not possible to deduce conclusions regarding the effect of sibling constellations from the results of the study and it is necessary to perform a more complex analysis using more sophisticated analytic strategies.
