Textual Interventions into Urban Public Space

Abstract:

Tato disertační páce se zaměřuje na umělecké textové intervence do veřejného prostoru, konkrétně na vizuálně-verbální díle na území města Brna. Práce je členěna do šesti kapitol. V první kapitole se soustředíme na vymezení ústředních pojmů naší práce, konkrétně pojmů vizuálně-verbální díla a veřejný prostor. Druhá kapitola je věnovaná vymezení látky zkoumání, tedy vizuálně-verbálních děl, vůči jiným textovým projevům ve veřejném prostoru. V následující kapitole popisujeme tři základní složky vizuálně-verbálních děl, a to text, obraz a umístění díla, a snažíme se načrtnout interpretační přístupy k nim a vytvořit tak interpretační schéma pro vizuálně-verbální díla jako celek. Ve čtvrté kapitole navrhujeme několik možností kategorizací vizuálně-verbálních děl, přičemž tu, kterou pro naši práci shledáváme nejnosnější, podrobněji popisujeme. Pátá kapitola pak z této kategorizace vychází a na jejím půdorysu popisuje současný stav vizuálně-verbálních děl na území města Brna. Jednotlivá díla jsou přitom interpretována na základě interpretačního schématu navrženého ve třetí kapitole. V šesté a poslední kapitole jsme pro širší kontextualizaci našeho bádání stejný postup aplikovali i na vizuálně-verbální díla ve městě Bristol, čímž jsme verifikovali širší využitelnost navrženého interpretačního postupu. V závěru hodnotíme aplikovatelnost našich zjištění a zároveň popisujeme vizuálně-verbální díla v Brně z pohledu zpracovávaných témat, využitých uměleckých strategií a jejich vztahu k veřejnému prostoru jako takovému.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis focuses on textual interventions into public space, specifically on visual-verbal artworks in Brno. The thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter we aim at the definition of central terms of our thesis: visual-verbal artworks and public space. The second chapter deals with the need to distinguish visual-verbal artworks from other texts in public space. In chapter three the three aspects of visual-verbal artworks: verbal layer, visual layer and the site of the artwork, are examined in closer detail. In each subchapter focusing on respective aspects, we draw attention to the features that will be of interest in the interpretation and the analysis of chosen works from Brno, and we also introduce the general instructions for the structure of analysis. The fourth chapter is aimed at various types of categorizations of visual-verbal artworks. Various approaches are introduced and their applicability for various types of research is evaluated. Moreover, the categorization based the relationship of the artwork and public space is chosen as the most suitable for our thesis and it is examined closely. The fifth chapter gives the detailed analysis of the visual-verbal artworks in public space in Brno. Individual artworks are analyzed based on the interpretation scheme introduced in chapter three. To be able to contextualize the findings about the nature of visual-verbal artworks in Brno and to verify the applicability of the proposed interpretation scheme, in chapter six the same method of analysis is applied on the situation in Bristol. In the conclusion we introduce mainly the specific features of visual-verbal artworks in public space, their most common topics, the creative strategies the artists use and the main aspects that should be considered when dealing with this kind of artworks. Also the applicability of the proposed interpretation scheme is assessed.
