Diversity and variation of squeaker frogs (Arthroleptis) from Central Africa

Abstract:

Žáby rodu Arthroleptis (kvikuňka, čeleď Arthroleptidae) představují především menší druhy terestrických žab subsaharské Afriky. Jejich hlavní společnou charakteristikou je přímý vývoj (bez stádia pulce). Biologie, včetně základního poznání taxonomické diverzity těchto žab, není dosud dostatečně známá. Tato práce se zaměřuje na čtyři taxony vázané na ekosystémy deštného lesa střední Afriky. Arthroleptis poecilonotus je jediným ze zkoumaných taxonů obývající spíše otevřené stanoviště a narušené lesy. Navzdory širokému rozšíření je jeho genetická variabilita ve střední Africe poměrně nízká poukazující na rychlé šíření v regionu, naproti tomu v západní Africe vykazuje poměrně diverzifikované evoluční linie. Převážně lesní taxony A. adelphus a A. variabilis vykazují vyšší genetickou diverzitu, kdy u každého taxonu bylo zjištěno několik geograficky limitovaných evolučních linií, které pravděpodobně korespondují s lokací historických refugií středoafrických deštných lesů v obdobích suššího klimatu. V případě některých linií se dá uvažovat o kandidátních, dosud nepopsaných druzích, popřípadě existují dostupná jména v synonymice v současnosti uznávaných taxonů. Čtvrtý, rovněž lesní taxon (A. sylvaticus) je také reprezentován vícero evolučními liniemi, které však jsou v tomto případě hluboce divergované (distance mezi liniemi často nad 10 %) a velmi pravděpodobně představují odlišné evolučně starší druhy. Výsledky této studie poodhalují skrytou a přehlíženou diverzitu žab rodu Arthroleptis, přispějí k poznání složité taxonomie tohoto rodu, a zároveň poskytnou informaci interpretovatelnou pro lepší pochopení historie ekosystému deštných lesů střední Afriky.

Abstract:

Squeaker frogs (Arthroleptis, Arthroleptidae) are mostly small-sized terrestrial anurans distributed in Sub-Saharan Africa. Their main common feature is direct development (without the tadpole stage). Biology, including the knowledge of the taxonomic diversity, is not yet well known. In the present study, four taxa associated with the rainforest ecosystem of Central Africa were investigated. Arthroleptis poecilonotus is the only one of the taxa examined, inhabiting rather open habitats and disturbed forests. Despite its widespread distribution, its genetic variation in Central Africa is comparatively low, indicating a rapid dispersal across the region, while it shows diversified evolutionary lineages in West Africa. Arthroleptis adelphus and A. variabilis, the forest-dwelling taxa, show a higher genetic diversity, where several geographically restricted evolutionary lineages were uncovered that are likely to correspond to locations of historical refugia of Central African rainforests during drier climatic periods. Arthroleptis sylvaticus, another forest-dwelling taxon, is also represented by several evolutionary lineages, which are deeply divergent in this taxon (genetic distances above 10%) and very likely represent different species. The results of this study reveal the hidden diversity of squeaker frogs (Arthroleptis), contribute to the understanding of their complicated taxonomy, and provide interpretive information to better understanding the history of the rainforest ecosystem of Central Africa.
