Hope, positive mental health and self-efficacy among patients with multiple sclerosis in comparison with general population

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje naději, pozitivnímu mentálnímu zdraví a sebeúčinnosti pacientů trpících roztroušenou sklerózou. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jak se v míře naděje a pozitivního mentálního zdraví liší osoby s roztroušenou sklerózou od členů normální populace, jak souvisí míra sebeúčinnosti s nadějí, pozitivním mentálním zdravím, vzděláním, věkem a pohlavím respondenta a jaký faktor je významným prediktorem sebeúčinnosti. Také jsme pomocí otevřených otázek v rámci dotazníku zjišťovali, jak pacienti s roztroušenou sklerózou vnímají svou momentální situaci. Dále jsme ve výzkumu využívali metody: Adult Hope Scale (AHS), Perceived Hope Scale, Mental Health Continuum Scale (MHC-SF) a The Liverpool Self-efficacy Scale. U osob trpících roztroušenou sklerózou jsme zjistili vyšší míru prožívané naděje oproti členům normální populace, nejsilnějším prediktorem sebeúčinnosti se ukázala dispoziční naděje a potvrdili jsme korelaci míry sebeúčinnosti jak s mírou naděje, tak s mírou pozitivního mentálního zdraví pacientů. Objevili jsme vliv dosaženého vzdělání na sebeúčinnost osob s roztroušenou sklerózou, zatímco vliv pohlaví či věku pacienta se neprokázal jako významný. V explorační části výzkumu respondenti uváděli problémy s únavou a zdravotními postiženími způsobenými chorobou a také jsme zjistili, že zdrojem podpory a naděje je pro ně především jejich rodina, partneři a přátelé.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with hope, positive mental health, and self-efficacy of patients with multiple sclerosis. The aim of this study was to examine the level of hope and positive mental health among individuals with multiple sclerosis compared to members of general population, identify significant predictors of self-efficacy, and explore the relation of self-efficacy with hope, positive mental health, education, age, and gender. We also used open-ended questions to find out how the patients themselves percieve their current situation. We used following methods in our research: Adult Hope Scale (AHS), Perceived Hope Scale, Mental Health Continuum Scale (MHC-SF), and The Liverpool Self-efficacy Scale. We discovered higher level of percieved hope among persons with multiple sclerosis compared to members of general population. We identified dispositional hope as the strongest predictor of self-efficacy and confirmed a correlation of self-efficacy with hope and positive mental health. We found out that the level of education affects the level of self-efficacy of persons with multiple sclerosis as oposed to patient's age or gender, which seemed to have little to no effect on the level of self-efficacy. From our qualitative research we gained knowledge of the most common problems percieved by the patients, such as fatigue or disabilities caused by multiple sclerosis. We also discovered that they most frequently find support and hope among their families, partners and friends.
