The readiness of the Czech Republic to adopt euro currency since 2000, estimation of impacts on national economy and Czech National Bank using the example of the Slovak Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá připraveností České republiky na přijetí společné evropské měny euro. Cílem této práce je určit efekt přijetí eura na české hospodářství za využití zkušenosti Slovenské republiky, která roku 2009 evropskou měnu přijala. Za účelem nalezení odpovědi jsou nejprve představeny teoretické koncepty týkající se jednotné měny a hospodářské politiky státu. Následně v praktické části práce jsou analyzována data z období od r. 2000 do r. 2017. Pro jejich zpracování je využita metoda komparace a Difference in Differences, která umožňuje odhadnout dopad přijetí eura na české hospodářství na příkladu Slovenské republiky. Pro komplexnost je provedena analýza, která hodnotí připravenost České republiky na přijetí měny euro na základě maastrichtských kritérií a vybraných kritérií teorie optimální měnové oblasti. Následně je provedena analýza prostřednictvím metody Difference in Differences, která určuje vliv ekonomického vývoje eurozóny na ekonomický vývoj samotné České republiky v teoretické situaci přijetí eura Českou republikou v roce 2009. Z provedeného výzkumu vyplývá, že vhodnost přijetí společné evropské měny Českou republikou nelze jednoznačně konstatovat. Výsledky této práce umožňují rozšíření pohledu na danou problematiku a otvírají tak možnosti jak k argumentaci, tak položení dalších nosných otázek.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the readiness of the Czech Republic to adopt the common European currency, the euro. The aim of this thesis is to determine the effect of adopting the euro on the Czech economy using the experience of the Slovak Republic, which adopted the European currency in 2009. In order to find an answer, the theoretical concepts concerning the common currency and the economic policy of the state are presented first. Subsequently, in the practical part of the thesis data from the period from 2000 to 2017 are analyzed. The methods of comparison and Difference in Differences are used which allows to estimate the impact of adoption of euro on the Czech economy, using the example of the Slovak Republic. For the sake of completeness, an analysis is made that assesses the readiness of the Czech Republic to adopt the euro, based on Maastricht criteria and selected criteria of Optimum currency area theory. An analysis is then made using the Difference in Differences method, which determines the effect of economic development of the euro area on the economic development of the Czech Republic itself in the theoretical situation of the Czech Republic's adoption of the euro in 2009. The research shows that the suitability of the Czech Republic to adopt a common European currency cannot be clearly stated. The results of this work allow a wider view of the issue, thus opening possibilities for both argumentation and other questions.
