Web accessibility of Czech news portals: Focusing on the visually impaired

Abstract:

Výzkumná diplomová práce se věnuje hodnocení webové přístupnosti vybraných českých zpravodajských portálů. Zaměřuje se však především na aspekty přístupnosti ovlivňující slabozraké uživatele. V teoretické části práce definuje koncept webové přístupnosti a předkládá její pravidla a inkorporaci do zákonů vybraných zemí včetně České republiky. Teoretická expozice se dále zabývá zrakovými postiženími a dostupnými asistivními technologiemi, které k práci s počítačem využívají zejména slabozrací. Poté pomocí kombinace různých metod, konkrétně automatické i manuální kontroly přístupnosti zpravodajských webů a kvalitativních rozhovorů se slabozrakými obsahujících uživatelské testování v podobě setu praktických úkolů, diplomová práce zjišťuje, do jaké míry jsou tyto weby přístupné zmíněné skupině hendikepovaných. Práce se také zaměřuje na to, zda nejvýznačnější bariéry identifikované slabozrakými korespondují s pravidly WCAG 2.0 označenými nejvyšší prioritou. Obsahem diplomové práce je i předložení sady doporučení ke zlepšení přístupnosti konkrétních zpravodajských portálů.

Abstract:

The Research Master’s thesis aims at the evaluation of the web accessibility of selected Czech news portals. However, it focuses solely on the aspects of accessibility for the visually impaired users. In theoretical part, the thesis defines the concept of web accessibility and presents its rules and law incorporation in selected countries including Czech Republic. Furthermore, the theoretical exposition addresses visual impairments and available assistive technologies, which especially the visually impaired use to work with computer. Using a combination of different methods, specifically conducting the automatic and manual tests of accessibility of the news sites, and through qualitative interviews with the visually impaired combined with user testing that consists of a set of practical tasks, the thesis then aims to discover to what extent are these sites accessible to the handicapped group mentioned before. The thesis also aims to assess whether the most significant barriers identified by the visually impaired correspond to the WCAG 2.0 rules, which are of the highest priority. The Master’s thesis also presents a set of recommendations that would improve the accessibility of selected news portals.
