Analysis of the impact of low interest rates on bank economy in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je analýza vlivu nízkých úrokových sazeb na hospodaření bank v České republice. Vyhodnocení hospodářských výsledků českého bankovního sektoru bude provedeno pomocí finanční analýzy absolutních a poměrových ukazatelů ziskovosti v období mezi lety 2007 až 2017 s ohledem na míru a směr působení dalších interních a externích determinantů na výnosnost bank. Podrobnější analýza relativních ukazatelů rentability bank, provedená v rámci jednotlivých skupin bankovních institucí s použitím rozkladu rentability vlastního kapitálu na dílčí ukazatele, neprokázala vliv nízkých úrokových sazeb na návratnost aktiv českých bank. Relevantnějším ukazatelem pro posuzování míry vlivu nízkých úrokových sazeb na výnosnost bank je čistá úroková marže, jejíž vývoj u většiny analyzovaných bank prokázal negativní směr působení nízkých úrokových měr na její hodnoty. Výsledky komparační analýzy vývoje poměrových ukazatelů jednotlivých segmentů českého bankovního sektoru neprokázaly dominantní vliv nízkých úrokových sazeb na výnosnost českého bankovního sektoru ve sledovaném časovém úseku.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the impact of low interest rates on bank performance in the Czech Republic. The financial results of the Czech banking sector will be evaluated using financial analysis of absolute and ratio indicators of profitability between 2007 and 2017, taking into account the extent and direction of the effect of other internal and external determinants on the profitability of banks. A more detailed analysis of the relative indicators of bank profitability, performed within individual groups of banking institutions using the breakdown of return on equity to sub-indicators, did not prove the effect of low interest rates on the return on assets of Czech banks. A more relevant indicator for assessing the impact of low interest rates on banks' profitability is the net interest margin, whose development for most of the banks analyzed has shown a negative effect of low interest rates on its values. The results of the comparative analysis of the development of ratios of individual segments of the Czech banking sector did not demonstrate a dominant effect of low interest rates on the profitability of the Czech banking sector during the monitored time frame.
