Molecular survey of dental calculus in ancient populations

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na shrnutí současných poznatků o využití zubního kamene jako zdroje informací o historických populacích, a to především z molekulárně biologického hlediska. Zubní kámen začal být jako zdroj DNA využíván teprve nedávno a možnosti konzervace, které poskytuje, umožňují studovat stravu, imunitní reakce, onemocnění či migrace i dávno zaniklých populací. Obsahem práce je i původ a složení zubního kamene, specifické vlastnosti historického zubního kamene a molekulární metody aktuálně aplikované na tento materiál.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the summary of current knowledge on the use of dental calculus (tartar) as a source of information about historical populations, particularly from the perspective of molecular biology. Dental calculus began to be used as a source of DNA just recently and the conservation possibilities it provides allows one to study diet, immune response, disease, or the migration of populations that vanished long ago. This work also contains the origin and composition of dental calculus, the specific features of ancient tartar, and molecular methods currently applied to this material.
