Už odedávna vodní toky představují pro člověka významný prvek v krajině. Díky jejich využitelnosti se stávají jedním z nejvýznamnějších lokalizačních faktorů, určujících rozmístění osídlení. S rozvojem lidské činnosti se pak rozvíjí vliv, jaký lidé mají na samotné vodní toky. V rámci přetváření krajiny dochází ke změnám na úrovni povodí i samotných koryt vodních toků. Water flows have always been important elements in the landscape. Thanks to their usability they become significant location factors determining the layout of settlements. Consequently, people significantly affect these watercourses by their activities. Changes within river basins and water flows occur in the process of reshaping the landscape.
