The economic crises of emerging Latin American economies under conditions of high capital mobility from the 1990s to the present

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zaměřuje na téma hospodářských krizí zemí Latinské Ameriky od 90. let 20. století po současnost. Konkrétně pak zkoumá země Argentinu, Brazílii, Chile a Mexiko. Období je zvoleno záměrně s ohledem na rozmach kapitálových toků po tzv. ztracené dekádě 80. let v tomto regionu. Právě značně zvýšený příliv kapitálových toků do deregulovaných finančních trhů je jeden z faktorů, který zapříčinil rozmach jednotlivých krizí v regionu. Vyvstává ovšem v posledních letech i otázka, jak do toho vstupují instituce a jejich kvalita. To je právě cílem této práce – jaký vliv mají instituce na kapitálové přítoky do těchto vybraných ekonomik. Práce využívá ekonometrického modelu, a to specificky dynamického modelu panelových dat a pro odhad jeho parametrů používám metodu momentů – konkrétně zobecněnou metodu momentů (GMM, Generalized Method of Moments). Za pomoci tohoto modelu bylo v práci zjištěno, že ve vybraných ekonomikách mají signifikantní dopad na příliv přímých zahraničních investic (PZI) instituce "kvalita regulatorních opatření" a "právní stát". Na příliv portfoliových investic nemají žádné instituce vliv, neb ty ovlivňují převážně mikroekonomické faktory. V neposlední řadě model také zkoumá vliv PZI v kombinaci s institucemi na růst HDP per capita. V kombinaci s PZI pak "míra/kontrola korupce" a "právo hlasovat a zodpovědnost za svobodu" mají signifikantní vliv na růst HDP per capita. Ve všech těchto institucích vychází nejlépe Chile, které samo několik let dbá o rozvoj těchto institucí, ale zároveň neuvolnilo přísun kapitálu v 90. let, tak jako ostatní státy. Naopak je regulovalo a regulovalo i finanční trh. Proto chilská ekonomika je méně náchylná k nejrůznějším krizím, tak jako ostatní zkoumané země regionu.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis focuses on the topic of economic crises in Latin American economies from the 1990s till today. Specifically, it examines the countries of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. The period is intentionally chosen with regard to the boom of capital flows after the so-called "lost decade" of the 1980s in this region. The significantly increased inflows of capital into deregulated financial markets are considered one of the factors that caused several economic crises to arise in the region. However, in recent years, the question arises of how and what role institutions and their quality play in that game. That is precisely the goal of this thesis – to examine the influence of institutions on capital inflows into these selected economies. The thesis utilizes an econometric model, specifically a dynamic panel data model, and for estimating its parameters, the method of moments is used – specifically the generalized method of moments (GMM). Using this model, in the thesis there was identified that the institutions like "regulatory quality" and "rule of law" have a significant impact on the inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the selected economies. No institutions have an effect on portfolio investment inflows, as those are mainly influenced by microeconomic factors. Lastly, the model also examines the impact of FDI in combination with institutions on the growth of GDP per capita. Institutions in combination with FDI, the institutions as "control of corruption" and " voice and accountability" have a significant impact on GDP per capita growth. Chile performs the best in all of these institutions as it has been developing and focusing on them for several years and has not released so much the capital inflow in the 1990s as the other countries. Instead, they regulated them and regulated the financial market as well. Therefore, the Chilean economy is less susceptible to various crises, as are the other studied countries in the region.
