Interpretation of Orchestral and Solo Scores for French Horn Depending on Development of the Instrument

Abstract:

Cílem předložené práce je popis interpretace orchestrálních a sólových partů pro lesní roh v závislosti na vývoji nástroje. Práce je zaměřena na zpracování dostupných informací o lesním rohu a popis toho, jak mohly znalosti o lesním rohu ovlivnit hru samotnou. Dále práce předkládá charakteristiku vývoje lesního rohu a paralelně i vývoj metodiky hry na tento nástroj v průběhu několika hudebních epoch. Pozornost je věnována také možnostem skladatelů, kteří pro tento hudební nástroj skládali, a stoupající náročnosti orchestrálních a sólových partů. V neposlední řadě je cílem také co nejpodrobněji zdokumentovat tato díla, která je možné označit za zlomová, a porovnat je s dnešní technikou a osobní praxí.

Abstract:

The aim of the present thesis is to describe interpretation of orchestral and solo music for French horns in connection to evolution of the instrument. The thesis is focused on providing information on the French horn and describing how knowledge about this instrument could have influenced the way this instrument has been played. Characteristics of evolution of the French horn as well as the development of the methodology of playing the instrument during several musical epochs are also presented here. A part of the text is concerned with possibilities of composers who wrote music for French horns and the development of orchestral and solo music for these instruments, which got more and more difficult. Last but not least, the aim of the thesis is to provide a detailed documentation of pieces that can be seen as turning points and to compare them with the current technique and the author’s own experience.
