Measurement of national competitiveness with focus on small open economies

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá měřením národní konkurenceschopnosti malých otevřených ekonomik. Cílem diplomové práce je identifkovat modely, které jsou vhodné pro měření jejich konkurenceschopnosti a porovnat jejich výsledky. V teoretické části je představena diskuse nad konceptem národní konkurenceschopnosti v průběhu historie. Soustředíme se hlavně na Porterův pohled na národní konkurenceschopnost a jeho kritiky. Následuje kapitola věnovaná možným metodám, pomocí kterých se dá národní konkurenceschopnost měřit. Věnujeme se zejména kompozitním indikátorům, jejich tvorbě, nedostatkům a nejpopulárnějším aplikacím v praxi. V předposlední kapitole popisujeme podrobně Porterův model diamantu a jeho modifikace, na jejichž základě jsou vystaveny kompozitní indikátory, které následně aplikujeme na země V4 a Německo a komparujeme jejich výsledky.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on measuring the national competitiveness of small open economies. The aim of the thesis is to identify models that are suitable for measuring their competitiveness and compare their results. The theoretical part introduces a discussion of the national competitiveness concept throughout the history. We focus mainly on Porter's view of national competitiveness and his critics. The following chapter is devoted to methods by which national competitiveness can be measured. We pay particular attention to composite indicators, their creation, shortcomings and the most popular applications in practice. In the penultimate chapter, we describe in detail Porter's diamond model and its modifications. Lastly, we construct composite indicators ourselves based on several models and we apply them to the V4 countries and Germany so we can compare their results.
