Faith and psychotherapy: How do therapists experience the influence of their Christian faith on their therapeutic work?

Abstract:

Předložená práce se zabývá problematikou vztahu mezi terapeutovou křesťanskou vírou a jeho terapeutickou praxí. Jejím cílem bylo na základě opakovaných polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se třemi terapeuty, praktikujícími protestanty, zkoumat specifické události, při nichž se stalo, že terapeut do sezení vnesl něco ze své víry. K analýze byla zvolena metoda IPA. Výzkum představuje porozumění jednotlivých respondentů, co se týče způsobu, jakým tyto události prožívali a jak o nich přemýšleli. Jako prostředek k uchopení zkoumaného tématu nabízí metaforu fotbalového hřiště, jež stojí na vnímané hranici mezi hracím polem, která představuje psychoterapii a vnášení obsahů a hodnot z jeho prostoru je vnímáno jako bezpečné, a pro-storu za hraničními čarami, který představuje obsahy spojené s terapeutovou osobní vírou a často jsou vnímané jako něco, co do terapie buď nepatří, nebo jenom za určitých podmínek. Podoby jednotlivých specifických událostí, jejich porozumění a prožívání se přitom velmi liší a představují tak koláž podob, jakou může toto hřiště, jeho hranice a jejich překročení pro terapeuta mít. Výzkum tak nabízí fenomenologicko-hermeneutický náhled na praktické zkušenosti tří terapeutů s integrací víry a psychoterapie a představuje tak příspěvek do porozumění, jakým terapeutova víra ovlivňuje jeho terapii a jak s ní v jejím rámci uvnitř i nave-nek zachází.

Abstract:

The presented thesis deals with an issue of relationship between therapist’s Christian faith and his or her psychotherapeutic practice. Based on repeated semi-structured interviews with three Protestant therapists, the thesis‘objective was to explore specific events in which therapist’s faith was somehow brought into the psychotherapeutic session, using the IPA methodology to analyze these events. Individual respondents’ understandings as for how they experienced these situations and how they made sense of them are presented. To interpret the results a metaphor of a soccer field is offered based on a perceived boundaries between the inner field representing psychotherapy and topics and values the bringing of which is perceived as safe and the space behind the sidelines representing topics and values related to therapist’s personal faith whose inclusion into therapy is perceived as dangerous or safe only if certain conditions are satisfied. The forms of individual specific events, of their comprehension and of their experiencing vary significantly and make a collage of ways how this field, its boundaries and their crossing may be experienced by therapists. Thus, the presented research offers a phenomenological-hermeneutic view of three therapists’ experience of integrating their faith into psychotherapy and represents a contribution to understanding of the ways how therapist’s faith influences his or her psychotherapeutic work and how it may be dealt with both inwardly and outwardly.
