The Prague Hospital in Karlov and its administration in the years 1862-1929 (in the context of social care facilities)

Abstract:

Bývalý augustiniánský klášter na Karlově v Praze není jen významnou dominantou hlavního města, ale po dobu 140 let byl i sídlem městského chorobince. K jeho založení v roce 1789 vedly josefínské reformy, jejichž záměrem byla mj. centralizace řízení chudinských institucí. Cílem diplomové práce je přiblížit historii a správu chorobince v letech 1862 až 1929, tedy od přechodu ústavu i s příslušnými fondy pod administrativní správu pražské obce až do jeho definitivního zániku. Autor práce si klade za cíl z dostupných archivních i jiných dobových pramenů zachytit každodenní chod ústavu, současně jej - s oporou současné odborné literatury - položit do kontextu s proměnami sociální péče na sklonku monarchie a v období počátku republiky.

Abstract:

The former Augustinian monastery in area of Pragues Karlov district, is not only an important landmark of the capital city, but for 140 years it has also served as a site for the municipal hospital for incurables. Its foundation in 1789 was driven by the Josephinian reforms, which were also aimed towards centralization of the management of institutions for poor. The aim of the diploma thesis is to describe the history and management of this hospital in the years 1862 to 1929, i.e. from the time when administration of the institute and its relevant funds were shifted under the supervision of the Prague municipality, until its final dissolution. The author of the thesis aims to describe the everyday administration of the institution, by relaying on the available archival, and other historical sources. At the same time, to put it into a context of changes in the social care system at the end of the monarchy and during the beginning of the republic.
