Anotácia:

Bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá spojitostmi mezi uměním a společností, zejména nově přibývající střední třídou, v Anglii devatenáctého století. Stručně uvádí některé charakteristické jevy doby a jejich vlivy na životy Angličanů, jelikož vývoj událostí v umění a kultuře je často ovlivněn událostmi z jiných oblastí lidského zájmu. Práce představí již zavedenou instituci Královské akademie umění v opozici proti Bratrstvu Prerafaelitů a estetickému hnutí, která se teprve seskupují. Práce se věnuje podobnostem a rozdílům jejich teoretických základů, jelikož tyto umělecké skupiny souvisí s později založeným hnutím Umění a řemesla a významnými osobnostmi anglického umění devatenáctého století, Johnem Ruskinem a Williamem Morrisem. Dále práce zkoumá estetické názory Ruskina a Morrise, přičemž se soustředí na úlohu a funkci umění, roli umělců a způsob jejich práce. Ruskinovy a Morrisovy názory přejímají stoupenci hnutí Umění a řemesla a snaží se je realizovat. Práce popisuje jejich přístup k umělecké činnosti a charakter jejich výrobků.

Abstract:

The bachelor’s diploma thesis explores the relation between art and society, especially the growing middle class, in nineteenth-century England. It briefly mentions some of characteristics of the century and their effects on lives of the English because art and culture often copy the development in other spheres of human interest. The well-established institution of the Royal Academy of Arts is presented in opposition to the emerging Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the Aesthetic movement. Similarities and differences in their theoretical backgrounds are examined because all these artistic groups relate to the later-established Arts and Crafts movement and significant personalities of nineteenth-century English art, John Ruskin and William Morris. The thesis deals with aesthetic opinions of Ruskin and Morris and it focuses on what art should and should not do, the role of artists, the way artists should create works of art etc. Ruskin’s and Morris’s ideas are adopted and brought to life by adherents of the Arts and Crafts. The thesis describes their attitude to work and the style of the Arts and Crafts objects.
