Seeking optimal, creating marginal? Ethnography of a Youth Diagnostic Center.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with the technologies, which within the sphere of the so-called special education in Slovakia and specifically youth diagnostic center, produce specific conditions in which children or young people with so-called behavioural disorders are placed. In this thesis, I am concerned with the performative layers of these conditions, which are mostly not fully realized by the actors, but only perceived, as opposed to the overt interventions inherent in institutional biopolitics. At the same time, I argue that these technologies shape children not as socially emancipated, but primarily as economically acting subjects. By excavating the historical forms of the technologies that produce children and childhoods, I have attempted to show that these economizing strategies have always been present in the biopolitics of childhood, although today they take on new, often paradoxical, forms in late-liberal rationality. The thesis is methodologically anchored in ethnography, following the practices of science and technology studies.

Abstract:

Dizertačná práca sa zaoberá technológiami, ktoré v rámci sféry tzv. špeciálnej výchovy na Slovensku a konkrétne diagnostického centra pre mládež, vytvárajú špecifické podmienky, do ktorých sú umiestňované deti, resp. mladí ľudia s tzv. poruchami správania. V tejto práci sa zaoberám performatívnymi vrstvami týchto podmienok, ktoré nie sú vždy plne uvedomované, ale len tušené, na rozdiel od zjavných zásahov inherentne vyplývajúcich z ústavnej biopolitiky. Zároveň tvrdím, že tieto technológie formátujú deti nie ako sociálne emancipované, ale predovšetkým ekonomicky jednajúce subjekty. Exkurzom do historických podôb technológií produkujúcich deti a detstvá, som sa pokúsila ukázať, že tieto ekonomizačné stratégie boli v podstate odjakživa prítomné v biopolike detstva, hoci dnes v neskoroliberálnej racionalite nadobúdajú nové, často paradoxné podoby. Práca je metodologicky ukotvená v etnografii, pričom sleduje postupy vedných štúdií.
