Reflections On the Turkish Problem In Stories by Václav Vratislav z Mitrovic

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje významnému dílu starší české lieratury - "Příhodám" Václava Vratislava z Mitrovic. Zabývá se zařazením "Příhod" do kontextu české humanistické cestopisné literatury a literatury s tureckou tématikou. Těžištěm práce je však rozbor odrazu turecké tématiky v díle. Zajímá nás autorův pohled na osobně poznané turecké prostředí a jeho konfrontace s některými tehdejšími zažitými představami o Turecku a jeho obyvatelích. Snažíme se vyložit, které poznatky z turecké problematiky stály u Mitrovice v popředí a které naopak nepovažoval za důležité. Zabýváme se autorovým pohledem na Turky, jejich mentalitu a zvyklosti. Poté se věnujeme také povahové charakteristice Turků a také využítím získaných poznatků v celkovém vyznění díla. Zajímá nás nejen dokumentární hodnota díla, ale také jeho moralistní a zábavná funkce. Hledáme důkazy pro tvrzení, že Mitrovic cítil povinnost čtenáře vychovávat a kárat, ale myslel také na jejich pobavení.

Abstract:

This B.A. thesis deals with an important work in the older Czech literature- the “Stories” by Vaclav Vratislav z Mitrovic. It aims at placing the work into the context of the Czech humanistic travel literature and the literature dealing with Turkish themes. However, the main focus of the thesis is an analysis of the reflections on Turkish themes in the work. We are interested in the author’s point of view based on his personal experience with the Turkish environment and his confrontation with some of the then engrained images of Turkey and its inhabitants. We also try to find out which Turkish themes did the author consider to be important and which not. We discuss the author’s point of view on Turkish people, their mentality and habits. Then, we also outline the characteristics of the Turks and also the use of the facts gained for the overall message of the work. We are thus interested not only in the documentary value of the work but also in its moral and entertaining potential. We look for proofs that Mitrovic not only felt the duty to bring the readers up and reproach them but that he also wanted to entertain them.
