The Czech of non-native speakers with non-Slavic first languages

Abstract:

Práce patří do oblasti aplikované lingvistiky, úžeji do oblasti češtiny jako cizího jazyka. Předmětem našeho zkoumání byl jazyk, který při studiu češtiny produkují nerodilí mluvčí s mateřským jazykem neslovanským. Studium jazyka studenta je důležitým prostředkem poznávání komplikovaného procesu osvojování cizího jazyka a může následně přispět ke zlepšování metodiky výuky cizího jazyka. V oblasti bohemistické lingvistiky tato problematika prozatím nebyla příliš zkoumána. Tato práce si tedy klade za cíl pomocí analýzy chybových (a správných) vyjádření popsat jazyk vybrané skupiny nerodilých mluvčích. Náš výzkum probíhal v období jednoho akademického roku, mohli jsme tudíž sledovat vývoj systematických lexikálních, gramatických a pravopisných chyb, kterých se studenti při svých pokusech používat cílový jazyk češtinu v jednotlivých obdobích studia dopouštějí. Předmětem zkoumání jsou psané projevy studentů produkované ve školních situacích od počátků osvojování až do úrovně B1. Práce se nejdříve zabývá představením teoretické a metodologické základny výzkumu, jimiž jsou především teorie mezijazyka a tzv. analýza chyb. Chybová analýza od konce šedesátých let minulého století prošla vývojem, dnes se využívá především chybová analýza s oporou o korpus. Také náš výzkum je založen na korpusu, který jsme sestavili z textů, jež vyprodukovali studenti češtiny na středisku Albertov ÚJOP UK Praha. Náš korpus má longitudinální charakter a celkový počet slov 8 477. Na základě studia anotačních systémů žákovských korpusů a v textech se vyskytujících chyb jsme pro náš korpus vytvořili vlastní chybovou taxonomii. Následovala identifikace, detailní rozřazení a kvantifikace chybových vyjádření ze sebraných textů. Zaznamenané chyby z jednotlivých lingvistických oblastí jsme následně podrobili kvantitativní a kvalitativní analýze, sledovali jsme jejich vývoj a formulovali hypotézy o jejich příčinách. Na základě kvantitativní analýzy jsme také vypočítali tzv. skóre správnosti jednotlivých morfosyntaktických jevů v jednotlivých obdobích výzkumu. Výskyt jednotlivých druhů chyb, jejich vývoj i skóre správnosti vybraných morfosynatktických jevů jsme mohli porovnávat u studentů dvou skupin, v první skupině byli studenti s mateřskými jazyky indoevropskými, ve druhé s MJ neindoevropskými. Toto srovnání nám umožnilo detailnější sledování mezijazyka češtiny studentů s MJ neslovanským. Poslední kapitola práce se snaží výsledky předchozí analýzy aplikovat do praxe a uvádí příklad využití naší analýzy ve výuce - pro úpravu sylabů a stanovení hodnoticích kritérií pro testování.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with applied linguistics specifically, with Czech as a second language. The topic of our concern was the language produced by learners of Czech with non-Slavic first languages. The study of learners' language is an important source for investigating the complicated process of second-language acquisition, which can lead to improvements in the methodology of teaching a second language. This issue has not yet been thoroughly investigated in Bohemian linguistics. This dissertation aims to describe the interlanguage of the selected group of non-native speakers by analyzing their correct and incorrect usage of Czech. Our research was carried out during one academic year; therefore we can observe the development of systematic lexical, grammatical and orthographic errors that learners make when they try to use the target language Czech during the period of acquisition. We analysed learners' utterances produced in classroom conditions from the beginning of acquisition process up to level B1. The thesis is concerned primarily with introducing the theoretical and methodological base of the research primarily the Theory of Interlanguage and Error analysis. Error analysis, which dates back to 1960s, has since evolved into what today is called Computer-Aided Error Analysis (CEA). CEA is based on learners' corpora. Our research is based on corpora that we compiled of texts produced by students of Czech as a second language in the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Albertov Study Centre of Charles University in Prague. Our corpus is longitudinal by nature and consists of 8,477 words. First, we created our own error taxonomy based on the error typology of the learners' corpus and on the types of errors found in learners' texts. Then we conducted identification of errors, classifying and quantifying the errors from collected texts. We analysed collected errors from a single linguistic domain, studied their development and defined the hypothesis of sources of errors. The quantitative analysis helps to score the accuracy of morphosyntactical units. We also compared the results of two groups speakers with Indo-European first languages and speakers with non-Indo-European first languages. This analysis enabled us to observe in detail the interlanguage of Czech learners with non-Slavic native languages. At the end of our research, in Chapter 4, some practical and methodological recommendations are presented.
