Production of coca in Colombia from an anthropological point of view

Abstract:

Strategie vymýcení koky a kontroly její nabídky se již léta ukazují jako neúčinné, což může jen naznačovat, že v analýze musí něco chybět. Předkládaná práce přistupuje k produkci koky v Kolumbii z antropologického hlediska s cílem zjistit, zda existuje soubor hodnot nebo zvláštní konfigurace kolumbijské společnosti, která ji činí tolerantní a náchylnou k ilegalitě, což se mění v konkurenční výhodu pro trh. Práce se zabývá historií koky, od jejích kořenů jako vyjádření andského regionu až po její přeměnu v nelegální obchod a to, jak Kolumbie nakonec sehrála roli protagonisty. Kromě toho tato práce představuje kulturní profil země a srovnává ji s Bolívií, Peru a Ekvádorem. Výsledky naznačují, že to nemůže být vysvětlení samo o sobě.

Abstract:

For years, the strategies for coca eradication and the control of the supply have been proving to be ineffective, and this can only suggest that there must be something missing in the analysis. The present work approaches the coca production in Colombia from an anthropological point of view, with the aim of investigating whether there is a set of values or a particular configuration of the Colombian society that makes it tolerant and prone to illegality, turning this to be a competitive advantage for the market. The paper covers the history of coca, from its roots as an expression of the Andean region, to its transformation into an illegal business and how Colombia ended up playing a protagonist role. Additionally, it presents a cultural profile of the country, and contrasts it with Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. The results suggest that this cannot be an explanation on its own.
