Dance for camera

Abstract:

Tanec jako nástroj komunikace je spojen s historií lidstva od samého počátku. Jeho význam a podoba se měnily podle doby a vyspělosti civilizace. V pravěku a středověku hrál významnou roli například v rozmanitých obřadech a rituálech (magických, náboženských, atd.). Později získával na významu rovněž prvek pobavení. Tanec se tak vyskytoval hojně například při různých slavnostech. Se vznikem tance zároveň vznikla i potřeba tento druh umělecké aktivity nějakým způsobem zaznamenat. Z počátku se jednalo například o nástěnné jeskynní malby a rytiny, ale s postupem času a rozvojem civilizace začaly být techniky pro záznam a uchování umění sofistikovanější. Rozvíjela se malba a sochařství. Velkým průlomem v tomto směru pak byl v novověku vynález fotografie, zaznamenávání zvuku a zejména film, který umožnil „živý“ záznam uměleckého díla. Práce se zabývá problematikou natáčení tance z hlediska kameramana. Taneční filmy lze na základně vůdčí složky výsledného díla rozdělit do dvou skupin, a to na snímky formátu „dance for camera“ neboli tanec pro kameru a na záznamy tanečních představení tj. kamera pro tanec. Oba žánry specifikují vlastní pro kameru významná omezení, avšak spojuje je nutnost úzké spolupráce tanečního a filmového umění. Snahou tohoto filmového žánru je proniknout do tanečního světa a pokusit se porozumět mu tak, aby bylo možné kamerou zachytit jeho podstatu. Konečným cílem je pak umět prostřednictvím tanečního filmu oslovit více filmových a televizních diváků. Text kromě literární rešerše vychází rovněž z vlastních zkušeností s natáčením tance pro kameru (screen dance, dance for camera), se záznamem tanečních představení, workshopů, performance a dokumentárních tanečních filmů. Jako důležité doplnění tématu jsou k práci přiloženy dva rozhovory s osobnostmi z daného oboru, a to s choreografem Petrem Zuskou a kameramanem Jiřím Myslíkem.

Abstract:

Dance as a means of communication has been part of the human story since the very beginning, its meaning and form changing with time and with advancements in human ingenuity. Throughout Ancient History and the Middle Ages, dance played an important role in various ceremonies and rituals (occult, religious, etc.). Later dance also became important as a form of entertainment, and was commonly seen during festivities. With the development of dance came the need to record the art form in some way. At first this was expressed through cave paintings and engravings, but in time the techniques for the recording and preservation of the dance became more sophisticated, especially in painting and sculpture. The invention in the Modern Era of photography, sound recording and in particular film was an important breakthrough, making possible a “live” recording of a particular body of work. This thesis explores dance recording through the lens of the person behind the camera. Using the central theme of the body of work as a framework, dance films can be divided into two groups: films known as “dance for camera”, and dance performance recording, also known as “camera for dance”. Both genre present significant limitations for the camera, but they are connected with the need for a close collaboration between dance and film. The aim of the dance film genre is to enter the world of dance and to try to understand it in order to capture its essence on camera. The end goal is to use dance films skilfully in order to make an impression on film and television viewers. In addition to literature research, this work has been influenced by the author’s personal experience with filming “dance for camera” films and with the recording of dance performances, workshops and documentary films about dance. The work is strengthened with interviews with two personalities renowned in the field, namely the choreographer Petr Zuska and the cameraman Jiří Myslík.
