Us and them - concept of symbolic boundaries applied on coexistence of Czechs and Russians in Carlsbad

Abstract:

Teoretickým východiskem mé práce je teorie symbolických hranic, výsledkem je případová studie. Ve své práci se snažím odpovědět na otázku, jaké symbolické hranice můžeme vymezit a popsat mezi Čechy a Rusy ve městě Karlovy Vary, čím jsou tyto hranice způsobeny a určeny. Symbolické hranice rozdělují jedince do různých skupin, definují jejich členství a vytváří pocity vzájemné podobnosti, čímž rozdělují společnost. Symbolické hranice odkazují na konceptualizace, pomocí nichž lidé definují sebe a ostatní. Tyto hranice vznikají jako pojmové rozlišování, které slouží ke kategorizaci objektů, lidí, jejich praktik apod. Smýšlení o rozdílnosti permanentě ústí v odlišování se. K popisu symbolických hranic v Karlových Varech jsem využila typologii Christophera Baila, který na základě Evropského sociálního výzkumu zařazuje mezi symbolické hranice vnímané v České republice etnicitu, náboženství, vzdělání, zaměstnání, kulturu a jazyk, z nichž kultura a jazyk jsou vnímány jako rozdíly nejpodstatnější. Po analýze problematiky docházím však k závěru, že v Karlových Varech jsou nejvýrazněji vnímanými symbolickými hranicemi etnicita, jazyk, kultura a peníze.

Abstract:

The theoretical base of my work focuses on the theory of symbolic boundaries; the result is a case study. The problem I am trying to solve is to answer a question of symbolic boundaries that can be defined and described between Czechs and Russians in the city of Karlovy Vary. My work deals also with causes and determination of these boundaries. For the reason of symbolic boundaries, individuals divide themselves into certain groups; their membership is being defined as well as the feeling of mutual similarity. By this, they divide the society. Symbolic boundaries refer to concepts by which people define themselves as well as others. These boundaries begin as conceptual distinction, which serves for categorization of objects, people, their practice etc. I used Christopher Bail’s typology to describe symbolic boundaries in Karlovy Vary,. According to this typology, which is based on European social research, ethnicity, religion, employment, culture and language are all considered symbolic boundaries perceived in the Czech Republic, with culture and language being the most essential of these differences. After analysis of these problems, I came to conclusion that the most perceived symbolic boundaries in Karlovy Vary are ethnicity, language, culture and money.
