Tourism attractions associated with the period of socialism in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je identifikovat potenciální turistické atraktivity v rámci tzv. socialist heritage tourism a jejich aktuální využití v cestovním ruchu. Mezi tyto atraktivity se řadí jak objekty, které byly v období socialismu vystavěny, tak místa, která toto období připomínají, byť přímo z té doby nepocházejí. Data byla získána primárně z veřejně dostupných zdrojů, jako jsou katalog Národního památkového ústavu či archivy různých architektonických akcí jako třeba festival Dny architektury. V případě potřeby byly organizátoři požádáni o neveřejná data (například návštěvnost jednotlivých míst v případě Open House Brno). Nalezené atraktivity byly následně rozdělené do pěti kategorií. Na základě získaných informací a historického předpokladu byl vymezen region pro případovou studii, který se skládá z okresů Frýdek-Místek, Karviná a Ostrava-město. Ve vybraném území bylo zjištěno, že zde nejen existuje potenciál pro tento typ cestovního ruchu, ale je již aktivně využíván, nejvíce pak v Ostravě, například v městské části Poruba prostřednictvím komentovaných prohlídek. Zájem je také od zahraničních turistů, kteří se na tyto památky vyptávají v informačních centrech. Lze tedy sledovat, že socialist heritage tourism má v České republice jistou poptávku. Zároveň lze z dostupných informací konstatovat, že zájem o místa spojená se socialismem má tendenci růst.

Abstract:

The goal of the bachelor's thesis is to identify potential tourist attractions within the so-called socialist heritage tourism and their current use in tourism. These attractions include both objects that were built during the period of socialism as well as places that remind us of this period, even if they do not come directly from that time. The data was obtained primarily from publicly available sources, such as the catalogue of the Národní památkový ústav or the archives of various architectural events such as the Dny Architektury festival. If necessary, the organizers were asked for non-public data (for example, attendance at individual locations in the case of Open House Brno). The attractions found were subsequently divided into five categories. Based on the gathered information and historical assumption, the region for the case study was defined, which consists of the districts of Frýdek-Místek, Karviná and Ostrava-město. In the selected area, it was found that there is not only a potential for this type of tourism, but it is already being actively used, mostly in Ostrava, for example in the Poruba district through guided tours. There is also interest from foreign tourists who inquire about these monuments at information centres. It can therefore be observed that socialist heritage tourism has a certain demand in the Czech Republic. At the same time, it can be concluded from the available information that interest in places associated with socialism tends to grow.
