Is Bitcoin a good hedge?

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Je Bitcoin dobrý nástroj na hedging? se zabývá problematikou kryp-toměn a jejich postavením mezi klasickými instrumenty finančního trhu a možnostmitvorby portfolia s těmito nástroji. Nejprve je práce věnována charakteristice finančníchtrhů a jednotlivých sektorů, se kterými diplomová práce pracuje. Do kontextu těchto sek-torů jsou dále zařazeny kryptoměny. Jsou identifikovány jejich znaky a odlišnosti, způsobobchodování a způsob jejich využití. Hlavní kryptoměnou, se kterou bylo prácováno, bylBitcoin. Poté jsou představeny další alternativní kryptoměny s nejvyšší tržní kapitalizací.Dále jsou v rámci literární rešerše vysvětleny principy Markowitzovy moderní teorieportfolia. V praktické části jsou nejprve analyzovány empirické studie o kryptoměnách.Následně jsou identifikovány předpoklady Bitcoinu diverzifikovat a optimalizovat inves-tiční portfolia, které jsou složena z klasických produktů finančního trhu. Zda může býtBitcoin použit jako vhodný diverzifikátor těchto portfolií, je testováno testem překlenutí(mean variance spanning test) s postupným rolováním v čase.

Abstract:

Diploma Thesis Is Bitcoin a a good hedge? deals with cryptocurrency and their positionbetween classical financial market instruments and the possibilities of creating a portfoliowith these instruments. First of all, the thesis deals with the characteristics of financialmarkets and individual sectors with which the thesis works.Cryptocurrencies are alsoincluded in the context of these sectors. Their characteristics and differences, the way oftrading and the way of their use are identified. The main cryptocurrency with which itwas worked was Bitcoin. Thereafter, other alternative cryptocurrencies with the highestmarket capitalization are presented. Furthermore, the principles of Markowitz’s modernportfolio theory are explained in the context of the literature review. In the practicalpart, empirical studies on cryptocurrencies are first analyzed. Subsequently, Bitcoin’sprerequisites for diversifying and optimizing investment portfolios, which consist ofclassic financial market products, are identified. Whether Bitcoin can be used as a suitablediversifier for these portfolios is tested by a mean variance spanning test with gradualscrolling over time.
