The Use of Board Games in Geography at the Lower Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá využitím deskových her ve výuce zeměpisu na 2. stupni základní školy. Cílem diplomové práce je vytvořit učební materiál, do kterého je implementována vybraná desková hra podporující nejen rozvoj klíčových kompetencí, ale také směřující k naplnění stanovených vzdělávacích cílů. Dílčím cílem je shrnutí konstrukčních principů, jež vyplynuly z postupného zkoumání deskových her a zážitkové pedagogiky, která je úzce spojena s tématem práce. Pro tento výzkum byla zvolena metoda konstrukčního výzkumu. Ve spolupráci s didaktičkou zeměpisu, učitelkou základní školy a žáky 7. ročníků byl vytvořen učební materiál. Sběr dat probíhal metodou pozorování ve výuce, polostrukturovaného rozhovoru s učitelkou a metodou ohniskové skupiny s žáky 7. ročníků. V praktické výuce byl materiál ověřen, přičemž bylo zjištěno několik nedostatků, které byly dle doporučení aktérů výzkumu odstraněny a upraveny. V závěru práce jsou popsána vyvstalá úskalí a následné úpravy učebního materiálu.

Abstract:

This master's thesis focuses on the utilization of board games in geography education at lower-secondary schools. The aim of the thesis is to create teaching material that incorporates a selected board game, supporting not only the development of the key competencies but also aiming to fulfill the defined educational objectives. A sub-goal is to summarize the construction principles that have emerged from the gradual exploration of board games and experiential pedagogy, which is closely related to the theme of the thesis. The research method chosen for this study was the method of design-based research. In cooperation with a geography methodologist, a lower-secondary school teacher, and 7th-grade learners, teaching material was created. The data collection was conducted through observation in the classroom, semi-structured interview with the teacher and focus groups' discussions with 7th-grade learners. The material was tested in practical teaching, during which several shortcomings were identified, subsequently addressed and modified on the recommendations of the research participants. In conclusion, encountered challenges and subsequent modifications of teaching materials are described.
