The process of economic convergence between Slovakia and Germany during the years 2004-2017

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá procesem konvergence Slovenska k Německu v letech 2004-2017. V první, teoretické části práce jsou vysvětleny základní pojmy a ukazatele spojené s problematikou jak reálné, tak nominální konvergence. V této části je také popsána výchozí ekonomická a politická situace obou zemí. Druhá, praktická část práce se již skládá především z analýzy vývoje zmíněných ukazatelů konvergence nominální (vývoj cenové hladiny a nominálního kurzu) a reálné (HDP v paritě kupní síly, nezaměstnanost, produktivita práce apod.). Práce také zohledňuje dopad ekonomických reforem zavedených před vstupem Slovenska do Eurozóny na proces konvergence a kde je to vhodné porovnává vývoj i s Českou republikou. Na základě této analýzy jsou pak vyvozeny obecné závěry ohledně vývoje procesu konvergence. Výsledkem této práce je potvrzení hypotézy o zpomalení procesu nominální konvergence od vstupu Slovenska do eurozóny. Problémovou se ukázala od stejného období být také konvergence reálná.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis studies the process of economic convergence between Slovakia and Germany during the years 2004-2017. The first, theoretical part explains the basic terms, indicators and concepts of nominal and real convergence. This part also describes the economic and political situation and history of both countries. The second, practical part consists mainly of analysis of key indicators for both nominal convergence (price levels, exchange rates) and real convergence (GDP per capita in PPP, unemployment rate, labor productivity). This thesis also goes through the effects of economic reforms that were implemented in Slovakia ahead of entering the euro area and where appropriate, compares the evolution of said indicators to those of the Czech Republic. Based on the results of this analysis, general conclusions regarding the evolution of convergence are drawn. The result of this thesis confirms the hypothesis regarding the slowing down of nominal convergence of Slovakia since entering the euro area. Real convergence turned out to have slowed down since the same period as well.
