Abstract:

Předmětem této bakalářské práce je analýza symbolu vody v románu Hermafrodit od řecko-amerického spisovatele Jeffreyho Eugenida. Voda, jako jeden z nejvýznamnějších symbolů v umění, proniká do literatury s velkou rozmanitostí týkající se její interpretace. Práce zkoumá použití symbolu vody jako formy fyzické a duševní proměny postav v románu. Pojednává o rozličných významech symbolu vody s ohledem na různé historické, kulturní a náboženské pozadí. Zkoumá způsoby, jakými je symbol vody v románu znázorněn a jejich propojení do jednotného konceptu transformace.

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to analyse the symbol of water in the novel Middlesex by Greek American writer Jeffrey Eugenides. Water, as one of the most prominent symbol in art, penetrates into literary works with a great variety of interpretations. This thesis examines the usage of the symbol of water representing a form of physical and spiritual transformation of the characters in the novel. It discusses the diverse meanings of the symbol of the water with respect to various historical, cultural and religious backgrounds. It examines how the symbol of water is depicted in the novel, resulting in the common concept of transformation.
