Legitimation of Power of the Flavian Dynasty after the Defeat of the Jewish Revolt in 70 C.E.

Abstract:

Ve druhé polovině 1. století. n.l. končí smrtí císaře Nerona dlouhé období panování římských císařů z julsko-klaudijské dynastie. Poté následovalo neklidné období označované jako rok čtyř císařů (68 n.l.), kdy se v krátkém časovém období vystřídali na trůnu císaři Galba, Otho, Vitellius a Vespasianus. Posledně jmenovaný pak založil novou dynastii Flaviovců, která se na delší čas ujala moci. Následné vítězství v první židovské válce (70 n.l.) využívali císařové této dynastie jako podstatný zdroj legitimizace moci a vladařského nároku, a to až do konce své vlády (96 n.l.). Tato práce se skrze prameny z tohoto období (především Válka židovská Josepha Flavia, Titův oblouk v Římě, triumfální pochod a flaviovské mince) zaměřuje na způsob, jakým Flaviovská dynastie využívala porážku židovského povstání k legitimizaci svojí moci.

Abstract:

With the death of emperor Nero in the second half of the 1st century C.E., had ended a long period of reign of the Roman emperors from Julio-Claudian dynasty. This was followed by turbulent period known as the Year of the Four Emperors (68 C.E.), in which emperors Galba, Otho, Vitellius and Vespasian succeeded to the throne in a short period of time. Last named founded a new dynasty of the Flavians, that for a long time took the power. Subsequent victory in the First Jewish War (70 C.E.) used the emperors of this dynasty as a substantial source of legitimation of power and claim to rule until the end of their reign (96 C.E.). This thesis through the different sources from this period (mainly Jewish War by Josephus Flavius, Arch of Titus in Rome, triumphal march and Flavian coinage) is focusing on the way how Flavian dynasty used the defeat of Jewish revolt to legitimize their power.
