Good Death in Vietnam War Literature

Abstract:

Disertační práce zkoumá ideál dobré smrti ve vybraných dílech americké literatury o válce ve Vietnamu, které vznikli v rozmezí let 1973 a 1990. Na základě teoretických poznatků z prací Philippa Ariès (který zkoumal měnící se postoje ke smrti v průběhu dějin) a výzkumů Drew Gilpin Faustové (která se zabývala smrtí v průběhu americké občanské války) práce nejdříve stanoví ideál dobré smrti v době války ve Vietnamu. Tenhle ideál sestával z dvou částí a dobrá smrt byla definovaná dobrými okolnostmi a dobrým cílem. Kritérium dobrých okol-ností znamenalo, že bylo dobré zemřít při konání hrdinných skutků (např. při záchraně života někoho jiného) a dobrý cíl znamenal zemřít ve službách své země, v boji proti komunismu, v boji za demokracii a svobodu, apod. Většina vybraných textů tenhle ideál nesdílí, autoři nehovoří o smrti, která by splňovala dané kritéria – většina úmrtí, které popisují, nesplňuje ani jednu z nich. Pro většinu autorů není smrt hrdinská (vojáci často umírají nahodile, bolestivě a často v nedůstojných způso-bem) a navíc neexistuje žádný cíl spojený s dobrou smrtí. Subverzi ideálu dobré smrti autoři zpochybňují základní předpoklad s ní spojený – že válka ve Vietnamu měla cíl, za který by stálo položit život. Válku problematizují, oslabují bipolární dichotomii komunismu proti de-mokracii a dokonce zpochybňují nebo parodují oficiální důvod, pro který se válka vedla. Většina autorů navíc taktéž utočí na zažitou představu, že válka je důležitým životním zlo-mem, která „dělá z kluků muže“ a ve svých knihách podkopávají a parodují narativní sktruk-tury Bildungsromanu, které jsou běžnou součástí literatury s tématikou války. Tihle autoři a jejich díla se zapojují do širší debaty o významu války ve Vietnamu a o je-jím místě americké kulturní a kolektivní paměti, protože tahle válka a její význam je často spojován s těmi, kteří v ní zemřeli a s cílem, za který položili život.

Abstract:

The thesis analyzes the good death ideal in ten selected works on Vietnam War literature written between 1973 and 1990. Drawing of theoretical insights of Philippe Ariès and re-search by Drew Gilpin Faust, the thesis first establishes the good death ideal during the Vi-etnam War. This ideal consisted of two features and good death was defined by good cir-cumstances and good cause. Good circumstances involved heroic deeds or other courageous acts (such as when a soldier sacrificed himself to save a comrade’s life) and good cause was defined as serving ones country, battling against communism, and fighting for freedom and democracy. Most of the ten selected books do not share this ideal, the authors do not talk about death which would fulfill either the good circumstances criterion or the good cause criterion, and most death mentioned in the ten selected books fail on both counts. For most authors, death is not good because it is not heroic (soldiers die randomly, in pain, often in an undig-nified manner) and there is no worthy cause associated with their death. In subverting the good death ideal, these authors question the basic assumption connected with it – that the Vietnam Was had a cause worth dying for. They problematize the war, undermine the bipo-lar dichotomy of communism versus democracy or even question and parody the cause for which the war was officially fought. In addition, most authors also attack the notion that the war is an experience which builds men and their narratives also subvert of parody the Bild-ungsroman narrative found in many books of war literature. By doing this, these authors are engaged in a wider debate about the meaning of the Vi-etnam War and about its place in American cultural and collective memory, because the war and its meaning is often connected with those who died and with the cause for which they gave up their lives.
