Selected transformations of the complex numbers plane

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce poskytuje přehled hlavních výsledků o kruhových zobrazeních v rovině získaných užitím algebry komplexních čísel. Svým obsahem částečně navazuje na autorovu rigorózní práci, kdy se především ve svých úvodních pasážích odkazuje na její dřívější závěry. Předkládaná práce je rozdělena do pěti kapitol. První z nich shrnuje některé potřebné výsledky a nástroje z rigorózní práce a doplňuje další jednoduché poznatky týkající se především analytického vyjádření přímek a kružnic (tzv. zobecněných kružnic) v komplexním oboru. Druhá kapitola pak vyšetřuje vlastnosti elementárních transformací komplexní roviny včetně kruhové inverze. Následně se kruhová inverze využije k neformálnímu zavedení nevlastního bodu rozšířené roviny komplexních čísel. Tuto kapitolu zakončuje pojednání o roli komplexního nekonečna v poměru trojic a dvojpoměru čtveřic různých bodů. Třetí kapitola se zaměřuje na přímá kruhová zobrazení neboli homografie. Dokazuje se zde množství fundamentálních výsledků o povaze dotyčných transformací, např. skutečnost, že libovolnou zobecněnou kružnici převádějí opět na zobecněnou kružnici. Před klasifikací homografií se samostatně věnujeme jejich jednoduššímu případu, a sice přímým podobnostem. Tuto kapitolu pak ukončuje prezentace několika výsledků o homografických involucích. Čtvrtá kapitola je věnována antigrafiím, tedy nepřímým kruhovým zobrazením, a kruhovým zobrazením jako celku. Do značné míry odráží podobu kapitoly třetí, kdy mnohé obecné výsledky lze obdržet obdobnými postupy jako v předešlé kapitole. Opět se věnujeme i zvláštnímu případu nepřímých podobností odděleně; klasifikaci obecných antigrafií však již neprovádíme. Na závěr čtvrté kapitoly rozebíráme téma involutorních antigrafií včetně několika našich původních výsledků. Konečně pátá a poslední kapitola se zaměřuje na vybrané prvky geometrické optiky, přičemž podává komplexní zobrazovací rovnice rovinného i obou typů kulových zrcadel na základě Newtonova modelu, kdy odhaluje jejich běžně přehlížené spojení s kruhovými zobrazeními, především kruhovou inverzí. Navíc jsme nalezli jistý neočekávaný vztah optického zobrazování s kuželosečkami, který popisujeme v závěrečném paragrafu naší práce.

Abstract:

The present dissertation thesis provides an overview of the main results associated with the planar circular transformations obtained by the algebra of complex numbers. The thesis partly elaborates on the author's rigorous thesis referring to its previous conclusions, especially in the introductory passages. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first one summarizes some of the necessary results and tools from the rigorous thesis and adds some basic knowledge concerning analytical expressions of lines and circles (the so-called generalized circles) in the complex realm. The second chapter examines the properties of elementary transformations of the complex plane including the circle inversion. Subsequently, the circle inversion is used to informally introduce the point at infinity of the extended complex plane. This chapter concludes with a discussion of the role of the complex infinity in a ratio of triplets and in a cross ratio of tetrads of distinct points. The third chapter focuses on direct circular transformations or the homographies. A number of fundamental results concerning the nature of the transformations in question are proven here, e.g. the fact that they convert any given generalized circle into another generalized circle. Prior to a classification of the homographies, their simpler case is studied, namely the direct similitudes. This chapter ends with a presentation of several results concerning the homographic involutions. The fourth chapter is dedicated to antigraphies, i.e. the indirect circular transformations, and the circular transformations as a whole. To a large extent, it reflects the structure of the third chapter, as a great deal of general results can be approached by similar methods to the ones discussed in the previous chapter. Again, the thesis deals with the special case of the antisimilitudes separately; however, a classification of the general antigraphies is not carried out. The topic of involutoric antigraphies is discussed at the end of the fourth chapter including some of my original results. Finally, the fifth and last chapter is focused on selected elements of the geometrical optics, providing the complex rendering equations for the plane and both types of the spherical mirrors based on Newton's model, revealing their connection to the circular transformations, mainly to the circle inversion, which tends to be overlooked. Moreover, I have found a certain unexpected relationship between the optical rendering and the conic sections, which is described in the closing section of the thesis.
